When I camp in Alaska we generally have a shotgun along, and bear spray, and an air horn. Never have I come close to using the gun for anything but a noise maker. But I sleep better. On the other hand I camp and fish extensively in BC and I never carry a gun there. Sometimes bear spray, usually bear bangers. The little hassle it takes to bring a shotgun into BC just makes it not worth the trouble or the $25. A gun is really just not needed and most likely not even useful if I did need one. If it were as much inconvenience in Alaska I would not carry there either. Last blackie I scared off I did it by tapping my fingernail on a metal table. Frankly, if I was so fearful in the outdoors that I felt I needed a gun all the time, I'd stay home. In Alaska, if I know there are bears in the area while I'm fishing I have the double barrel on my back, but otherwise it stays in the tent or the camper or locked in the truck and always with a trigger lock in place while in camp.
