11 days in southern California...

We just returned from an interesting trip to southern California. Sadly the passing of our SIL's mother necessitated attending her Celebration of Life on June 27th. We had planned on spending the 4th of July weekend in San Diego so rather than make two trips we extended our original itinerary.

The 480 mile run to east San Diego county while very hot {109} was doable. We were towing our 10' cargo trailer behind the 24' Class C hauling my Can Am Spyder. We found a very isolated unusual trailer park/RV park {sort of} and it was close to the ceremony at Otay Lakes. We spent 2 nights and rode the bike to the service.

As a treat we finally had the opportunity to visit the Pechanga RV Park in Temecula for two nights. Arguably one of the nicest facilities in the country {it is featured on the cover of RV magazine this month}. The amenities are awesome and I got to play golf at their course {Journey at Pechanga}. They have a huge hotel and casino and even with all of the amenties our pull through was only $60 a night.

We have friends just down the I-15 near Vista so we spent 2 nights at their place leaving the coach and trailer and riding down to San Diego on the bike. Our friends from Angel Fire finally got a slip at the Silver gate Yacht club {after waiting 7 years} and we spent the long weekend helping them break in their new boat.

Spending the 4th weekend out on Shelter Island is about the best show in town in southern California. Thousands of folks take over the island and the city puts on the
Big Bay Boom fireworks show featuring 4 large, synchronized commercial fireworks barges and the show ran for 20 minutes plus. Monday we rode back to vista for one more night with our friends loading the bike and trailer for the 8.5 hour return trip...and yes, it was very hot.

All in all a fairly creative way to take full advantage of our rig and toys that enabled us to reconnect with a lot of old friends and say goodbye to Elvia. Leaving Vista we went north on I-15 and east to I-10 so as to avoid the monstrous traffic found in San Diego. Gas in Yuma was $2.99, southern California was around $4.25 for regular and I managed to only spend $100 while there. Made it back to Ehrenburg on the Colorado river for a refill at $3.14 which got us home to Payson. Only 4 nights in RV facilities and 6 great nights with our friends really made for a great trip.

Foothill area is beautiful. I have a friend out there also, although not as high up.

I am more south Vista near the border with Oceanside/Carlsbad and yes the summer marine layer comes in quite often. Kinda sad to see visitors from Kansas or whatever at our beaches and it's totally cloudy.

Our friends have had 2 acres up on the very top of Edeghill Rd looking out to the Pacific for 40 years. It is one helluva view that we, like they, never tire of. Here is a shot looking off to the west into the ever present summer marine layer:
