6.7 Diesel Towing MPG

I was just blessed with a 2019 F250 Lariat with the 6.7l diesel. Never owned a diesel before. Planning a summer trip from New Orleans area to Atlanta area. I was curious what kind of gas mileage should I expect towing. I guess I am used to gas engines, where I have to plan my fuel stops carefully with at 35ft trailer.

One trip i was bucking a very strong head wind in Nebraska. Was getting 7 mpg with my 2012 F350 6.7. Was towing a 36' Keystone Raptor. Most other times i averaged around 10-11 if i took it easy. Finally bought a auxiliary fuel tank to eliminate haveing to stop so often to fuel up. One of the best purchases ive made for traveling.

My 3/4 ton 6.6L Duramax gets 10.5-11.5 mpg towing. On good roads and freeways I tow a steady 60 mph. I have absolute no โ€œneed for speedโ€ with that cozy, expensive toy in tow. Not towing: 16.5-17 mpg.

I get 7-8 towing 17000lbs at 75mph.
Set the cruise and go.

Thanks for all the information. Not trying to save and $$$, just trying to figure out when/where should i plan on stopping for fuel. We like to try to plan the fuel stops with food stops and or maybe short activites for the kids.

Thanks again to all.
I went to Hilton Head on my first trip with my new Ram 3500 CTD Towing my 33' Reflection fifth wheel - 12K lbs. It was 186 miles and I did it on less than 3/4 tank of fuel. Towed previously with a 6.4 Hemi where I was used to watching the needles progression from F to E. Not so with the diesel.

My prediction? Your going to love it.

Newer will likely give you a bit lower MPG.

For our trips we stop 2H after leaving in the morning, then again to make lunch and then once more 2H from our destination. We travel 600-700 miles per day requiring only 1 fuel stop so usually fill up at lunch.

I could make that thing get 8 mpg towing!
But I mananged to click off a 9mpg tank last year pulling a v nose 6x14 cargo trailer.
85mph into a Montana head wind will doo that to a guy.

LOL!!
OP's trailer is 7,500#, when I towed my DD 4 horse trailer home about 7,000# with the old 5.9, I went from about 11 pulling my 12,500# 5er to 14 mpg!
I would expect the OP to get around 12, if he isn't trying to go 75+.

One big reason that I bought a diesel was the ability to install a large fuel tank, so together with the greater fuel mileage,it gives me much more range and allows me to purchase at the place of my choice rather than the gas gauge mandate. When one gets to select lower fuel prices, much of the cost difference per gallon disappears.

True.... With MOST of us that have/need a diesel, we did not purchase them due to the great fuel mileage....... its all about TORQUE and HP..

With the difference in fuel prices being about 30%, a 30% increase in fuel economy is pretty much a wash. It will take millions of miles of towing to "save" any money.

Now that that's out of the way, you didn't buy it for fuel economy. If you had penciled it out, you were way ahead staying with the old truck. You bought it to PLAY. Quit worrying about fuel economy and go PLAY.

It's a 450 mile trip. The mileage difference between your gasser and a new diesel will be significant on the display and a 48 gal tank of diesel will get u there nonstop, but the overall cost difference will be less than the beer required for the trip!
