A clean engine is a happy engine!

I clean the engines on all our vehicles twice per year. Nothing like working on a clean engine, even if all you’re doing is changing the oil!

The only advice I’d give is to watch all the electrical connectors.

Does the manufacturer recommend cleaning the engine with water?

I'm with you there! If you can, avoid spraying large amounts of cold water directly on hot exhaust manifolds/turbos etc. Electronics, fuse boxes, and relays (etc.) generally like being/staying as dry as possible but an occasional shower won't hurt anything.

I don't clean my engines as often as I a few years ago. I once read that cleaning your engines doesn't do any good but, it doesn't hurt it.
I always felt it was good for the engine even it was only to make the engine look better and seeing oil, or other leaks, easier.

I always thought dirt and grease actually made the engine run hotter. But since I bought my diesel, there has been no washing. Read too many stories about components rusting, therefor causing problems.

Never have, never will. There always seems to be something else I'd rather do. Taking a beating for example.

Amazing how much dirt just settles on the intake and other parts.
Car dealers do it all the time
What do they use to get that nice shine on the engine and all the components?
I bought a truck from a friend and he had it detailed.
I popped the hood and it was spotless.:)

I clean the engines on our vehicles about twice a year. If I have a small leak, dirt will adhere to that leak making it easier to spot.

There's no good reason to clean them but I keep mine clean never the less. A clean engine is much easier to see leaks on.
Be it pride in ownership, working on it myself or what ever, there are positives to doing so and certainly no reason not to. I also spray water in the nooks and crannies of the body work to get dirt accumulation out that wouls otherwise trap moisture and result in premature rust.
Also, I would much rather buy from a person who has meticulously mainted thier vehicle.
