A horrid source of leaks!

Today I found what I hope of the leaks I have experienced on the fifth wheel. They were involved with the slide awning, and most difficult to figure out.

When it rained with the slide in, it seemed the inside of the sliding rear wall was wet. We have wall windows where the slide goes in and out, but the windows are inside with the slide and still it was wet. The wetness appeared vertically inside of the windows, up and down the wall.

Today, I put the slide out partially and began the search. Above the slide roof there is a flange that is part of the slide, and it has the seal on it that mates to the wall, but that did not figure in the problem. What would be outside when the slide was in? I was drawn to the mounting for the awning bar, and there I found it. Five screw holes with bare screws into the wall to hold the bar onto the slide wall. One was unscrewed about 1/16th of an inch and all were slightly too long.

I filled the holes up with caulking pressed in, cut off the tips of the screws, and then capped the outside with caulking over the screw heads.. Hope that is the end of that!

Not always - our leak had absolutely nothing to do with the slide

    Give it time.

Had it for 2 years after the leak was repaired and no problems. We no longer have that M.H. as we downsized.

  • It took 4 years for us and dealer to find a leak in our H.R. Class A. The suspicious area was at the end of the slide. The dealer kept replacing the slide seal which did not cure the problem.
Our slide topper got damaged in a wind storm and had to be replaced. When the work was being done, the workman discovered the source of the leak was where the bar for the slide topper was attached to the coach.
Sounds quite similar to what you have discovered. Once fixed, we never had any more trouble - hope you are as lucky.
  • When we were seasonal a lot people would get the screen rooms that permanently attached to the trailer and replaced the awning. Most just screwed the to the trailer and most ended up leaking. Sounds like you found the same thing.
