A trip without our coach.... never again!

Just returned from an 8 day vacation to Hawaii which was a little beyond the capabilities of our Class C and all I can say is "Never again!" Don't get me wrong, we had a blast. Our neighbors gave us their condo for a week so our costs were limited to air fare and a rental car (as food and drink are basically a wash).

This was our second trip to the islands and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring all that Hawaii has to offer but the travel (unlike in our coach), was nothing but a nightmare. When flying anywhere you surrender all control to the chuckleheads at the airlines/travel sites.

Despite having booked and paid for our flight months ago Travelocity {NEVER, EVER use Travelocity... but I digress}, :S we found our flight pushed back 8 hours and severely downgraded from American to US Airways {hands down the worst airlines on earth}.

A mere 30 minutes prior to leaving our (seriously overpriced), Phoenix hotel (near as I can tell there was no extra charge for the food poisoning :E that I got at their in house restaurant), for the airport I got a Robo call informing us that our flight had been canceled and they would try and get us out the following day. After 40 minutes on the phone I convinced them that this was unacceptable and they got us on a flight to Maui that came with a 3.5 hour layover before we could connect back to Honolulu.

The return flight was not much better and we spent most of it agreeing that travel in the motorhome was far and away our best option (unless you want to go to Hawaii). :R We love our coach and if it is even possible, appreciate the joy of our motorhome more than
ever. The food is way better and you can eat with out health concerns {Duh, what a concept}.

You won't see many (if any), motorhomes in Hawaii unless you count the hundreds of Prevost 42 - 45' Tag axle tour bus's but given the traffic on O'ahu you really would not want to drive a motorhome there. Gas was running around $3.25 for regular.

So here's to RV'ing... Like that old commercial said "It's the only way to fly". We had a great time once we got there and it was a thrill to get back in the water for a week of Boogey Boarding in the 80* water {especially at the ripe old age of 63} Sorry for the grainy cell phone pic:

Looking forward to lots of trips for the rest of the year but rest assured... none of them will involve an airport. :B

When you book through Travelocity, you are Travelocity's customer not the airlines. When we travel we either book directly, Club members with most major hotel chains, or though my company travel site.Still the direct customer.

You're right, when you book with the airline you are their direct customer and not a customer of a travel agency. You know what wonderful benifit that gets you? NONE!!!! We're talking about the same wonderful people that cancelled your flight on short notice. Do you honestly think that THEY would go out of their way to book you on a competing airline? At least a travel agent has the goal of getting you there and not just keeping your money. They have no problem moving you to another airline.

Actually when things go wrong or you need to reschedule it makes a big difference. When you book through one of the discount travel sites it is not easy to make changes.

Yes, airline travel sucks. If you have a chance, book flights with Hawaiian Air. My Niece works for them and they treat you like people.

That sounds like it sucks... but I would put up with it for a FREE trip to Hawaii! The bride and I went to Maui for 10 days for our honeymoon and loved it. We now have 3 dogs and 2 kiddo's, so we won't be going back anytime soon. I hope that when I retire we can RV out to the west coast, leave our camper for a couple weeks and fly to Hawaii again. Beautiful islands, I fell blessed that we had the opportunity to go!

From C to Sea, very different vacation styles.

I envy your surfing session, that would definitely put a grin on my face.

I've been lucky of late, few flights and mostly Jet Blue (with buying the extra-legroom seats). But I hate the process, which wasn't that much more fun 26 years ago when I traveled 100+ days per year on business.

Not quite...

US Airlines was bought out by American, who will be shutting them down around October. Until then the US Air aircrafts and employees continue to operate and at nowhere near the level of service provided by American. We witnessed enough FAA rules violations on that first flight to justify shutting them down immediately.

Our return flight was the "Red eye" direct into Phoenix and thanks to a nice tail wind from the Jet Stream we arrived in 5.5 hours (vs 6.5 going over). The Red eye was switched from American to US Air. Then the US Air flight was "delayed" and additional 2 hours and ultimately replaced with our original choice of an American aircraft and crew. All the flights were 100% full with far too many of the colorful idiots so well described in a couple of the above posts. :R

We had used Travelocity years ago with good results but have learned our lesson. If we have to fly it will be with a direct booking with the airline of choice. Now back to planning another great trip in our coach to get out of Tucson as summer arrived a couple of days ago and June is the hottest, driest month of the year.

Travel is always fun... We hope to get to the islands but we plan to do it on a cruise. Had hoped to do it for our 25th but maybe for our 30th. We shall see but 14 days on the boat sounds like but to me.

I lived on Hawaii for two years - plenty of time to see it. We went back once on a plane (1985) ... haven't been on a plane since. If we can't drive to it, we don't want to go.

We spent several years 'seeing the world' -- nothing and nowhere compares to the good old USA. Still places we haven't seen here, but we're definitely making a stab at it. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

We had a trip from he__ on a cruise and land tour in Alaska. We have not flown since (5 years) and have vowed never to fly again if we can help it. The entire trip was miserable as we were herded like sheep and crammed on a plane, bus, ship, or train at someone else's mercy. We have since bought an RV and started RVing. Our hope is to never again be told where to sit, when to leave, or when to eat. If our RV can't go there, we aren't going.

DW and I just returned from an anniversary trip to Hawaii. Experienced no problems with the airlines at all (Delta). Only complaints were 1) seats are just not as comfortable as my recliner at home, 2) it is really hard to sit for 6 or so hours and 3) I hate the time schedule (flying overnight) on the way back. Other than that, had a great vacation.

If we were traveling stateside, we would definitely prefer to do without airlines.

I still travel a good deal on business and I can say without question that air travel today is something to be endured. It's rare that a flight is not 100% full. Gone are the days of being able to grab an empty seat to carve out more elbow room for yourself. And those seats you sit in are tight, even on a guy that barely tips the scales at 200 lbs.

Having said that, I envy your trip to Hawaii. I lived there once upon a time. It's a special, magical place.

In days of old when airlines were bold and flights were either cancelled or overbooked they had a whole bunch of things they had do do for you the traveller.

Alas.. Rules were changed. (And frankly I've not been in an airport since.. I now fly the Damon Airlines..er,, highways in my Class A).
