Adding battery storage

I have a 2006 Jayco Greyhawk, 31 ft. I would like to know if the is a practical (as in not too expensive) way to add battery storage so that we can do more dry camping. Presently the unit has a 6.5 x 13 in slide out battery tray with a 105AH Everlast trolling/RV battery. The current battery does not take up the entire length of the battery tray. Are there other batteries that would fit this tray and have a greater capacity? Is there any where to add an additional battery. Hope someone has a good idea. Thanks for any assistance that anyone can provide.

Tim
  • Adding a second battery somewhere in the trailer is your cheapest option as you can use the existing inverter/charger and only need to run some 4ga wiring to the second battery. An AGM type does not need to be vented so it could be inside the trailer almost anywhere near the existing battery.

A generator is an expensive band-aid when you lack charge capacity in the first place.
  • It isn't the prettiest option out there, but you could mount a couple of batteries on the tongue of the trailer, or if it is a 5th wheel just put a couple of batteries in the front storage compartment. Just wire them in parallel..... not series.
  • 2 golf cart batteries (GC2) will not fit on a 6 1/2" x 13" tray. They are 10 3/4" x 7 1/8" and 10 7/8" high. Not much will fit in a 6.5" width. A 27 size is 12 3/4" x 6 3/4". Costco sells a Marine 27 with 115 AH. Probably very similar to what you have.
  • I'd check to see if the dimensions for two 6VDC golf cart batteries would work. They are taller than normal 12 volt jars, but when paired in series, offer a very good amp-hour rating.
  • I can't tell you about the battery compartment but you could consider a small generator just to recharge your batteries that you have. I know a few people that do it and don't seem to have a problem. You only need a 1000 or 2000 watt generator to charge the batteries.
