Bears and grills

I have grilled from Alaska to Maine. I have never had a bear problem. I think because I have always put the grills in covered plastic containers after they have cooled down and then put the container in a cargo bay. I have never cleaned the grills (much) after use.

I now have a Smoke Hollow grill that will require a rather large container.

My question is do I really need the container?

What do you folks do with your grills in bear country?

Just put them is a provided bear box? I did that once in the UP of Michigan.

NIL. (Next in line)

Bears... Forest Service fire crew stopped at our camp a few years ago. They had left a sealed, steel container at a fire site a week earlier. A “trouble bear”, known in the area, had broken into the container and eaten a dozen C-Ration meals.

We leave our outdoor stove set up and hang trash bags in the trees. Motion lights, pepper spray and the trusty 12-ga pump will have to suffice.

No bear boxes where we camp.

drsteve, up in Copper Harbor bear boxes were provided. I only used it because my new to me rescue dog, Ginger, kept pointing her nose over the berm at the front of camper while in the campground. You just knew she knew something you did not. She & I were not even buddies at the time.

I guess I find a covered box for my new grill. Even though I never worried about leaving it out in Alaska or Maine. I suspect the southern bears are more sophisticated.

If anyone else wants to chime in please do.

The boxes are getting more common, they installed them at our favorite NF CG here in Va.
If they have 1 bear problem, they'll be installing them.

+1. 3 out of 3 USFS CGs that I've been to this year here in northern Colorado have newly installed bear boxes, and they are all over the CGs. In RMNP they've increased the number of bear boxes at Moraine Park.

Folks: Haven't we missed the logical solution?

Ask Bear Grylls! (rimshot)

On first reading, that's what I thought the thread title referred to. Need them new eyeglasses.

If there is a bear box, I would assume it is there for a reason, and use it.

I put mine in a plastic tub in a cargo bay, or into a bear box if there is one.
I turn the flame up for a few minutes after dinner is cooked to burn off most of the grease and stuff.

IF there is a bear box, that's what I do with mine.
