Best AutoSwitching LP Valve?

Had an auto switch, thought it wasn't working, so replaced it with an el cheapo (cant even remember where I got it), and not sure IT is working right. this one doesn't even have the "moving" red and green indicators, just a dot on each side, one is green one is red. not sure how to tell if it's switched or running from one side or the other, my bad.

I just want to replace it with the best, so tell me, which one do you have and why is it the greatest thing since sliced bread?

thanks
mikey

(this looks like the one I have now...)

  • I have whatever came on the trailer.
I don't use it.I would rather go outside and switch over, knowing that the second tank is full, rather than be out in the nowhere with 2 empty propane tanks.
When we get back to a town, the empty tank gets filled.Only forgot one time,DW won't let that happen again!
  • I do the same as restlesswind. Mine will draw down both tanks, but I like to run one down, switch, then refil.
  • I like the other two posts before me. I have gotten up in the middle of the night during elk season to change over tanks. rather inconvenient but better than running out and not knowing it.
  • Three replies that have no use to the OP! Amazing!

I like the Marshall brand of changeover valve. Here is a link to one at PPL. Marshall Valve A remote indicator is available that will let you know when you're low on propane and can be read from inside the camper.

Marshall Gas is out of business, and those are no longer available.
The real best would be- in my opinion- either a Fisher or Rego regulator- but they are expensive, and not readily available. The newer version of what you have seems to be good (and what the PPL link steers you to).

I thought the center red dot in the OPs' picture changed from red to green, though I could be wrong.
  • thanks R12R and chris...

I need to take an actual pic of mine, as im not sure bout the red/green thing.

I also read on here that there is a certain way your supposed to turn on the tanks, like both closed, hook up pigtails, then lever or whatever to the tank you want, crack that open slowly, then crack the other one slowly so as to not flow too fast or something?

and to the people who prefer to manualy switch, hey, can I take you with me next time, cuz ive already done it 2x at 3am, and frankly, that was 2x too many!!!!

    thanks
  • I think what you have is probably working fine. You might be misreading the indicator.

If the indicator is green you should have propane. If the indicator is red then the primary tank needs to be refilled asap. Move the lever or knob to the other tank before you disconnect and fill the empty.

Beware the secondary tank may get low by the time you read the indicator. So it may not seem to last as long as it has been partially used. If running the furnace or other high use check the indicator every morning. If you check in the evening the propane store may close, BTDT.

I have never run out of propane or fiddled with tanks after hours. I fully trust the automatic regulator.
