best side of truck for rear looking camera...

I was going to mount a secondary camera on back of cap and was wondering which side of the truck to use. Port/passenger side or starboard/driver side.

I have a, or will have a, license mounted back up camera and the monitor has a secondary input so I was going to put another rear looking camera up on fiberglass cap.

I was thinking on the passenger side to see the trailer in turns like at rest stops, fuel stops etc. It easy enough to see the tires on driver side so passenger side would be better??

what do you think.. or what is been your experience.

You might be able to place the camera on the trailer at the front maybe attached to the awning bracket pointing to the area of the tires that you are trying to see, and run a coax cable to the front of the trailer that hooks to the pulling vehicle, same as the light and brake cable except it is a cable connection for the tv signal.

my bad,, i got that completely mixed up.. leave it to a Navy man to get it right..

I was mainly looking for something to use when moving around in tight places to be able to see the passenger side and trainer. When i was a big rig truck driver we had a big round convex mirror under the regular mirror you could use to see the back tandems on the trailer. Most likely not going to be driving at night much but can turn the camera off is needed.

being i will be pulling, most likely, an 28ft Airstream so in the center of the truck will only show me the trailer top or front window wheres as I need to see the passenger side wheels when in tight spots.. the driver side is easy,, drop window and pop head out.

so i guess the answer is there is no answer 🙂 but keep the comments coming. they do help.

Also there will be a backup camera mounted on license tag as well.

Port, left side of the vessel facing forward, red light.
Starboard, right side of the vessel facing forward, green light.

Starboard derived from the Vikings they had the steering oar on the right of the ships "steerbord" steering board, other side was called lardboard and was too confusing so it was changed to Port.

Mount the camera dead center and as high as possible, other wise place it on the drivers side and also high "port side, aft and aloft".

I don't mean to be a smarty,but port is left,drivers side and starboard is right,passenger side...assuming you are in the US of A.

If you are planning on using the REAR CAMERAs when going down the road they will not be good for you when it gets dark. The on-coming cars behind you will flash them up big time unless they are mounted real high up and pointig down at a good angle.

My Ford Truck came with one mounted in the tail gate and it is perfect for using to hook up my trailer but that is about all I can use it for...

Using one to aid you backing into a camping spot should be mounted on the trailer up high on the rear of it like this google photo shows



My 5th wheel trailer has two 9-inch scare lights mounted up high on the each side of my trailer and I can turn them on when backing into camping spots and it lights the area where I can see real good.

Mounting lights on the rear of some trailers will not let you pass safety inspections in some states...
