I was a skeptic about dowsing rods until my Father-in-law had me try it one day. He had me walk across the field behind his house. I used the parallel rods (2 metal rods that cross each other when you pass over water). I was the most surprised person on earth when the 2 wires made the X right in front of me and I had nothing to do with it. We continued walking the field. And every time the wires made the X he said... yep, that's an underground drainage ditch there. When we got got back to the house, my Mother-in-law asked him..."Well, how did he do." He responded, "He's got the gift!"

When I got home, I tried around the house where I KNEW the ditching and draining lines ran... guess what? The rods never crossed! But they did cross at every underground electric line!

when we first started this RV thing back in 1986 we always traveled with whatever water was left in the tank from the last stop. why bother filling the tank. water was always available, right?

one night we pulled into a motel/RV park near Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. long story short...in the process of checking in I discovered (on my own, mind you, the desk clerk never mentioned this) that the NM Dept of Public Health had shut down the park's potable water supply due to e-coli contamination. we had just enough water to take a shower, cook and for bathroom activity. we had planned to stay longer but given the situation we left the next morning.

since then we never leave home or start a travel leg with less than a full or nearly full tank of fresh water and an empty or nearly empty gray tank. ya just never know where the road might lead you or what the conditions will be when you get to where you're going. the additional weight of the fresh is a fraction of our overall weight.

I can't imagine leaving home without my potable tank FULL and the grey and black EMPTY. If I had to worry about weight or handling I would get another vehicle.
I could be delayed at any point and need the facilities that my RV offers.
Extra fuel cost makes me laugh--------------recreation isn't for the penny pincher.

I don't think volunteers would be considered public servants. Around here without them a lot of stuff would burn to the ground. Paid SFD is too busy playing with themselves.

Around here you could find some way to fill. Gas station, public park, etc. But, we are not in the boonies.

Exactly, I guess it depends on your definition of boonies. We have 11800 people in my county of 180 square miles.

As for our local Fire Departments they have a house outside to fill farmers water tanks for their agriculture sprayers, or other such things. You put a couple of bucks of change in the machine and get 100's of gallons of water out this large house hanging outside the fire hall.

Now, how you would fill your tank with that, I have no idea. lol

To assist a camper in a rural area or in a remote location where a firehouse is located to provide protection and assistance is not setting a precedent, its doing what they do!
I camp in some remote and DRY locations out here in the west and have passed by many a ranger station and fire station or fire look out and Not once has any of them denied me any service!!
I would think that the more you deny your citizens the more you alienate your self from the community!
jesus,, to have the attitude of "do something for one and everyone will expect it" Is not "Public Service"!!

Out here I have not only topped my fresh water tank off, but I have filled rafts and water float toys and filled tires and topped off my radiator.
I couldn't imagine telling a young kid,, "No we don't use our compressor to fill bike tires, Go home kid, next thing you know everyone will want their tires filled"

Youd be surprised the requests you get at remote outer lying stations!! I have taken a smaller 4x4 grass fire rig out to help a couple change a flat tire, Driven out and jumped a dead battery or two! Had a young couple come up to the door eyes were watered like they were crying, told us they accidentally ran over a raccoon and killed it,, we drove out, scooped it up and bagged it because they felt so guilty!!
Three o'clock in the morning the door bell rings (remote location) lady is shaking cold, she took a wrong turn and got lost,, ran out of gas, brought here in and got a five gallon can of gas, drove out to where she thought she stopped,,, took a couple of round trips to find her car, gave here a blanket and some gas, handed her a map with the directions she needed to get where she was going. She tried to hand us some money,, No thats what we are here for!!
crazy thing about it,, every year after we always got a nice basket of snacks and nice card from her and her family.
Couldn't imagine telling her,, "sorry Mame, Do we look like triple A" "If we helped you we'd be up all the time helping every one else that got lost"!!
Last I checked you are a Public Service!!!

helping a driver who is in need of the type of assistance you mention at 3am is quite different from the topic at hand. and yes, you may be more likely to get that sort of assist in smaller towns and rural areas. scream and make noise all you want. but as I've said twice now, you may find the sort of help we're discussing at some places but certainly not all places. and what's the big deal? it's not like fresh water sources are rare...even in the boonies. take a deep breath and calm thyself.
