best wheel chocks to use

Can someone reccommend a good set of wheel chocks to use? I already have the x-chocks which I use to help stabilize and they work great. However, being a new owner of anything larger than a pop-up, I am paranoid that when I retract my front landing gear to unhitch (I use an Andersen Ultimate hitch) that because I have to raise it higher than most people, that my RV will start rolling backward. I have some small rubber chocks that I put behind each rear wheel, but it just seems so small compared to the 5th wheel. Also, do I need to buy 8 chocks (one for the front and back of each tire) or would 4 be plenty (behind the rear tires and in front of the front tires).

I know I am probably being overly paranoid but I really don't want to play catch with the campsite behind me.

    I like and use the Andersen levelers, but I don't count on them to keep the trailer from moving. I use cheap Harbor Freight chocks on the side of the trailer opposite the levelers to keep the trailer secure.

    I have been using the cheap yellow plastic chocks for 10 years on my 5er. Work fine, even on slopes.


    Mine were OK until I ran them over...

    I have 4 of the 'heavier' rubber wheel chocks as shown above, although I did not get them from HF. Just run about a 2 foot loop of 3/8 nylon rope thru the eyelets to make them easily grabable. I even dipped the rope ends in some of the that liquid rubber stuff (red) that's available these days. These things are heavy duty and inspire confidence. I just toss them in the back of the truck after hitching up.

    ** Remember the Golden Rule - Chocks go down FIRST before unhitching and get picked up LAST.

    Given a choice I much prefer the same adjustable BAL Standard Tire Locking Chock used by DutchmenSport - one on each side of the trailer absolutely prevents the trailer from shifting at all.



    Unfortunately these adjustable chocks won't shorten enough to fit between the tires on our current Coachmen so for this trailer I instead use rubber chocks between each tire set, secured in place with hardwood spacers. Different solution - same result, a trailer that can't shift in any way regardless of site slope.

    I use a set of rubber chocks when I initially start unhitching, for safety. Then, out come the BAL X-Chocks. Those are good because they seem to help with side to side movement, and I have two long shackle padlocks which are a decent theft deterrent (yes, the tires can be deflated so one can wiggle the chocks out, but it is better than nothing.)

    I have a set of Roto-Choks that I use, and also carry two of the rubber chocks from Harbor Freight. I would think 2 would be enough, if that trailer is moving enough to roll over the chocks then another set won't stop it either. The HF chocks are extremely solid without much give.

    I use the HF chocks when the toyhauler is in storage since it is on a slight hill. Never had any issues with it moving.

    This^^ raising the front end (or lowering it) won't have any effect on whether the trailer wants to roll away. That is entirely due to the slope of the parking site.

    I have a pair of plastic chocks from Camping World that we bought with the $50 gift card we got when we bought the TT. I also plan to buy a pair of Anderson Levelers that will do the chocking on the side than needs to raised for leveling. I don't unhitch until the TT is level left to right and then chocked on both sides, so it's not going anywhere on it's own.

    Years ago I took two 8 inch chunks of treated 4x4 and cut them on a 45 degree angle. Drilled a hole in the ends and added a piece of rope. Used them for my trailers, class A and still using them for the cars when doing work. Since each pair has a rope on it, put one block in front and one behind the tire. When you go to pull them you can normally grab the rope and pill them right out.
