Brake controller showing trailer disconnected.

So pulling my TT back from a long weekend get away I noticed my Reese brakeman 4 was showing trailer disconnected. All lights worked, I was able to stop fine, truck has oversized brakes.

I know I should have a good ground, because all lights worked

Recently I removed the battery, maybe 1 cable. Outdoor be loose?

Brakes got very hot last time I pulled it, because I over adjusted them. Could I have melted a wire?
  • Stuff I forgot to add.

I have a vehicle tester for the 7way and all checks out there.

I know the brakes are bad, I already ordered new ones.
  • I just had similar problem. All lights worked but no trailer brake. Took out a pocket knife and bent the prongs tighter together on the trailer end. Problem solved, both truck & camper are only 1 year old and I keep my connections clean so I first thought something bad happened . Wife googleing madly telling me numerous things to check.Told her remember KISS.

    Wall,

Running the brakes hot could have caused all manner of things that the controller is complaining about.

    The controller's test is simple:
"Do I see the expected resistance of electric brake magnets on my output lead?" Yes/No.....
If there is any bad connection or an open or just bad magnet, it may decide the answer is no.
The manufacturer can tell you what that resistance should be. Get a GOOD meter and test it.
If it is not good at the plug work your way back to the brakes. (I actually usually test next at the connector that is near the brakes. More than a few times it is the leads to the magnets or corroded terminals in that connection.
If it is good at the plug, the track that wire though the TV to find where the road salt messed up the connections (again).
