Bringing an out of state RV to Texas

My elderly dad, who lives in Maine, has given me his old 1988 Coachmen Class C motorhome. Due to age and health he gave up his Maine drivers license about 2 years ago and didn't renew the registration or insurance on the old MH since 2011. I'd like to bring the rig to Texas where I live, but I don't quite know how to get plates to drive it from Maine to Texas. I can't register the rig in Maine because I'm not a resident and can't register it in Texas without a state inspection first. Anyone have any thoughts on how this can be done...legally?
Thanks for any info!
  • Thanks a lot folks....We are in Maine at present getting ready to RV into New Brunswick and Nova Scotia for a month. We had hoped to take the old MH from Maine to PA and put it into storage in Hershey until we get back to Texas in Sept or Oct. Then drive the car to PA to retrieve the MH and drive it the rest of the way to TX. Looks like I can do a transit plate from ME to PA and then the TX 30 day temp plate from PA to home. Thanks again for your help!!
  • I cant answer that, I always am in Texas, or if I buy out of state, I always go before hand and get it. All you need is the serial number.

wouldn't he have to buy that in texas before he leaves? what info will he need to do that? if the OP is already in maine can he buy that thru the mail or over the phone? just curious.
  • Any temp permit will get you to Texas. Of course you will need to get it inspected before you register it in Texas. They will honor the temp plate until you get that done, takes about 15 minutes.
  • I buy Texas temps all the time, 30 days , 25 bucks. any registration office will fix u up.
  • Texas has temporary vehicle registration tags usable for 15 days. I wonder if that might be what you need.
  • see if maine will issue an 'In Transit' tag for you. you can't be the first person who acquired a MH in maine and who wants to drive it to an out-of-state residence. also don't forget to call your insurance agent to get coverage.
  • Call Maine DMV and ask them about a temp or trip permit. That for a reasonable fee should get you to TX.
