Burglary of RV

Brother stores his Redwood 5th wheel at a covered storage place in the Ft. Worth area. Someone broke into it by breaking out the skylight in the bathroom and dropping in thru the roof. They took his large TV that was bolted to the wall. Hit 6 other RV's in the same lot. Never heard of coming in thru the roof of an RV.
Just a heads up.

I hope there is a sign at the border telling the rest of the country of this. I know they don't do that in MN , IA, Or SD. You have to put up a no trespassing sign around here.

In Texas you would probably be looking down the barrel of a gun if you crossed the purple line.

My defense is to store my rig a number of miles from an interstate, and miles from a paved road. Few thieves will jump a locked gate that has prominent purple striped posts in rural Texas in order to look for goodies. Even the meth heads are not that obviously suicidal.

Storing a rig in Austin, I'd do a totally different tactic. All televisions would be popped off the racks and put in drawers so if they vanish, they vanish, and don't take a wall with them. I'd also probably leave a dead TV or other thing in the storage compartments, a concept similar to mugging money, since a tweaker is less likely to trash a rig if they snatch something than if they are empty handed.

Just curious......I'm at a lose......What is the significance of purple striped poles? Does that mean something special in Texas? I'm just not familiar with this and would like to know.

Also, the dead tv so they won't trash the place is a clever insight. I hadn't thought about that before. Thanks

I was wondering the same thing.

The dead TV and a few bucks in a drawer sound like a good idea.

Yeah, but I think your problem was the concern you had for the damage you might do. Those thieves don't worry too much about the shape of your vehicle when they're done. ๐Ÿ™‚

People showing how they deter (read deter) theft helps other people which is what this forum is about. No one needs to be told how dumb of an idea it is to do so since its so obviously easy to break into an RV. Maybe next you will tell me that my tongue lock is useless and that I should just offer up my stuff like a lamb tied to a stake in the middle of a tiger preserve.
No one, repeat no one, has stated that the ideas are dumb. They're not dumb,at best they are relatively futile. If you think they will do some good then by all means put them on, but I don't believe they will stop a semi-determined thief. Maybe you'll get lucky and only the lazy ones will visit. ๐Ÿ™‚

Exactly again.

Fortify away if please. It will make no difference to me or the thief.

One thing for sure will stop a thief in his tracks; keep valuables out of your trailer when in storage. Oh sure, he may break in but a can of beans or some blankets won't bring very much on the fence market. Now a TV set or a radio, propane tanks or batteries are a different story. They can bring a few bucks to a Crankster on a binge and he/she knows it.

If set up correctly, (quick disconnects, snap locks etc) these things can be taken out of your trailer in a matter of minutes and taken to your home and put in the safety of your garage. DO IT! Unless you live in a hood worst than your storage. :E

Another is pick your storage carefully. Is it the cheapest around? More than likely there is a reason for that. If so, it might be in the "wrong hood." Does it have security or is it just a field with nobody around?

Camera's? Although not perfect by any means, most thieves do not wear masks like in the movies. Trail cam's are really good when hidden in a good spot (so they don't get taken) and can ID the low-lifes.

Unless you are THE target for a specific reason, anything you can do to deter a thief will help. Like others have said, just try and make it easier for them to move to a different target.

Some have made comparisons to stick built homes and how much more secure they are. It is not that difficult to break into a house either. There is the phrase you don't need to outrun the dog (or whatever is chasing you), you just need to outrun the next slower person.

Having experience with this I can assure you that insurance will not make you whole. You might get lucky and come out even on the monetary side but they will not fix your wife or kids on sense of security.

Isn't that the purpose of nearly all theft prevention modifications and devices? To hopefully prompt the thief to move on to easier pickings, leaving your stuff alone?
Yes - it is.

Sorry, but this is just a pet peve of mine concerning this topic. When a member posts about security precautions, locks or whatever, out of the woodwork comes people who have to say how useless these measures are against theft. If I were the guy with bars on my skylights and someone said it was about as useless as a lock on a paper bag, I would take it as being called an idiot. Who else but an idiot would lock up a paper bag? Telling a person that his mods are useless or futile is insulting. If you think so fine, but keep it to yourself.
