I made reservations in March for Deer Trail Campground in Nekoosa, WI for July 27 through Aug 3 for a Vietnam unit reunion in the area.A month ago, one of my army buddies who lives in nearby Friendship offered his property for the 3 of us who are RVing for the reunion. He even had 20 amp circuits installed for us. I had paid in advance for the campground and when I called, they said no refunds, only credit good for a year and reminded me that was stated when I made the reservation. Yes, it was dumb to think plans would not change and pay the entire amount rather than just a deposit.I would much rather stay at the friend's property with the others, but having a hard time eating $175 for the week. Does anyone have a suggestions for possibly selling the week or the credit?

I suppose you could make up a poster and nail it to a pole like the street protesters do. Then you hang out in front of the campground (but not on their property) and advertise your campsite for 50% off. That ought to do it.Or maybe you could call the owner of the campground, instead, and plead your case.

I assume you are staying at you buddy's for little or no cost. If so and that is where you would rather be, you are really not out anything. It is all in the way you look at it.

You may not need it, but if something goes wrong, you got it still. Maybe someone else for the reunion can use it? Post it on their web or however contacts are being made for the event. And do another vet a favor and offer it for free. Sort of a pay-it-forward since you got a free spot at your buddy's place. Maybe just post it up on craigslist for a vet free camping. I belong to a volunteer group to help disabled vets. Find one in your area and donate it to them and let them know it's good for up to a year. You could write it off that way perhaps. But what ever you do, don't let the money get in the way of your reunion. Thanks for your service!!

Stay with your Nam buddies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are having a 50th reunion (2/7 Cav '65) in Chattanooga this coming Oct. Will be staying in the hotel with the others. Just need to find a safe place to park the MH for those few days. Always better to be in the same place as your buddies. And more convenient for activities.

Long after you have forgotten the money, you will remember the time you spent camping with your buds. Your plan is what I would do.

But as a thought, why not do both? Looks like they have a pool, and some other fun stuff. Maybe check in, camp at your bud's place, but spend a day or two hanging out with them at the pool, drinking a few brews maybe?

Might not be allowed but is a thought.

I don't know how desirable that campground is, but consider advertising the site you have on Craigslist. At a discount of course, but at least you can recoup some of your money. Someone out there may be looking for a place to camp that week.

You can:

A. Pay the $175 and camp at the CG, not enjoying that time with your buddies.

B. Pay the $175 and camp at your friend's with your buddies enjoying all of the time available.

Either way, you are out the $175, but only one way gives you max time with your buddies.

Those are pretty restrictive CG policies. Usually if canceling this far in advance the CG will allow full refund, as they fully expect to rent the site. Or at least will charge a deposit fee.

However, if they informed you of those policies when you make the reservation, you have no recourse with them. But you have nothing to lose by pleading your case with the owner. Try that. Otherwise just eat the expense and use the credit later in the year.
