Canada / Snow Goose Deterrence

Some years ago, my cousin and her husband were full-timing and workamping. She forwarded a post to me of an RV Park that was looking for help with an overpopulation of Canada geese. Carol knew I had started a business in goose deterrence with my Border Collies, and thought I would get a kick out of the posting.

What is goose deterrence? Basically, I contract with property owners / managers to haze Canada geese from their property because the geese have become so numerous as to become extremely messy, even destructive. I have placed more detailed information on my business website:
Canada Goose Dog Mama, workcampers (www.hardeybordercollies.com/id133.html)

At the time, there was no traveling for me, as I was taking care of my Dad who was in his 80's. The world turns, and after twelve years of Canada goose deterrence in the Denver, Colorado area, we (the dogs and I), have become full-time RVers.

Every fall, the Canada geese invade the Denver, Colorado area, and we are busy patrolling our clients' properties. Then, in spring, the geese head north, leaving us with nothing to do. So now, we are looking to follow these original "Snowbirds" northward in the spring, and provide goose deterrence for beleaguered property owners & managers north of us.

Obviously, this doesn't fit the norm of workampers, it is more like a “situation wanted,” do you think there would be any interest (or perhaps you know of a need), and where would you recommend posting? I am posting to Workers on Wheels, WorkampingJobs.com, RV Job Line.com as well as Working on the Road - Escapees Discussion Forum.
  • Hello GooseDogMama!

When he retired, my Godfather, got free golfing by running off the Geese with his big, black lab! They would drive around in the golf cart together and the lab would jump off when commanded and chase the birds off!

    Maybe when I retire...
  • Don't know about the southwest, since it all seems to be desert, but here in the southeast, geese are an issue in the winter... consider coming south during the winter. why stay and fight the snow in the winter?
  • I have an Aussie dog. I just turn her loose and the geese scatter.
Some airports are using dogs for that exact purpose.

  • We have the geese everywhere also. It is just something you learn to live with.

The geese come back and nest where they were born, we now have geese nesting in mall parking lots because before pavement it was wetland. It is so sad to watch.
  • Canada geese are a year 'round plague here in the Pacific Northwest. Worse in spring/summer of course, probably only because that's when folks want to use the parks, beaches, golf courses etc. that are so befouled by goose you-know-what.

I'd think there'd be a market here for your services, but tying it to an RV space likely limits your choices/opportunities by quite a bit. This unless you can preidentify and direct-market yourself some (perhaps "upscale?") RV park that has such a problem and would be interested in a resident goosechaser to control it.
