Carbon Monoxide

My detector went off twice last weekend while camping. During the middle of the night and when I pulled back into home at the end of the weekend.

During the night that it went off the heat was on but the tank ran out of propane during the night. Not sure if it was before or after the alert went off.

The detector itself says built in March of 2011.

Should I replace the detector? Should I have the RV checked for a leak?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Best--Jeremy
  • Both the Carbon Monoxide detector and the Propane Detector only have a 5 year life.

Dog fraudulence has been know to set off the Propane Detector but not
    the Carbon Monoxide detector.
  • Just for curiosity, do you have a dog?

I ask because our propane detector is down near the floor (where it should be) and we have observed that if the dog chooses to sleep there, a fart in the night will set off the propane detector.

Which makes sense, if you consider that farts are going to contain methane, chemically very similar to propane.
  • Thanks so much for responding. I just bought a plug in with display as back up and will probably have the one that came with the unit replaced.
  • I'll second having two. I'm the nervous type and like the redundancy on something that important. I have the built in and a plug-in.
  • They're only good for about 5 years so it's time to replace it.
  • Right on the detector in my trailer it says to replace it after 5 years. Even though the trailer is new, I didn't want to risk it not working and not waking up, so I bought a second one that I also have in the trailer.

In my old house I had one next to the stove. It started to go off and we had the gas company come and do a test. He said that having it next to the stove is bad and actually damaged the sensor. No leak, just device gone bad.
  • Look close at the detector to see if it has a date it was put in service. I just replaced ours. It had a continuous beep. Instructions said it would do this 7 years after placed in service and it needed to be replaced. Yours is not 7 years but could just be time to replace it. My new one says replace in 10 years. No batteries to replace like the old one just replace in 10years. Also the kind of is different for each; alarm, replace batteries, replace monitor.

What some folks do is mount two of those sensors. I never could figure out if the alarms were real or just a battery glitch...

Alot of things will set them off. generator running outside and the wind changes made mine go off one time which was a steady alarm... All the other alarms I seem to get are short beeps???

I always thought a beep ever second or so was a battery alarm and not worry about that and the real alarm would be a louder steady sound...

But like everyone else when it goes OFF I get nervous... I will get up and open some doors and windows haha...

Having two working at same time close to each other might give you some better confidence feelings about them... i.e. both should go OFF if you had a leak????
