The states still control this tho but I would expect a lot of states to follow the suggestions. Not the Plague Centers tho. So maybe we will be able to RV again.

We are going out to find some cotton material that can be used to make washable masks. They recommend the stuff like tee shirts are made of. 6 or 8 layers. It will not stop viruses but will stop spray from coughs and sneezes.

It is better to be alive and broke than to be dead so stay in isolation as much as possible to protect yourself your family and everyone else. And good luck to you all. My wife and son presently returned from the states, she did not get it but my son did, we have all bean in isolation for 14 days and my son now is good again and seeing his kids for the first time in 5 weeks. We in Australia are still not allowed to travel interstate or from one area to the next if not for shopping or in transport or emergency services. Ve donโ€™t particularly like it but it is for the best.

I think we'd all be happy with a 40% vaccine right now.

Amen, they were starting flu shots around here back in August.

The CDC chooses at a particular time due to how long it takes to manufacture and release (FDA approval) the vaccine before the start of the flu season.

WHO wrote:
It takes approximately five to six months for the first supplies of approved vaccine to become available once a new strain of influenza virus with pandemic potential is identified and isolated. These months are needed because the process of producing a new vaccine involves many sequential steps, and each of these steps requires a certain amount of time to complete. The vaccine development process from start (obtaining a virus sample) to end (availability of vaccine for use) is summarized below.

Pandemic influenza vaccine manufacturing process and timeline

Timeline is the same for all strains of influenza.

A lot of people buy lottery tickets with a lot worse odds. I would much rather get a flu shot than deal with having the flu, even if there is still a chance that I might get the flu anyway.

The thing that seals the deal for me is the fact that if I get a flu shot and end up getting the flu anyway it probably won't be as severe as it would have been if I hadn't gotten the flu shot. That translates into less time being sick, less risk of being hospitalized or worse. Plus I get to pat myself on the back for helping to improve herd immunity.

Flu vaccination has been shown in several studies to reduce severity of illness in people who get vaccinated but still get sick.

A 2017 study showed that flu vaccination reduced deaths, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, ICU length of stay, and overall duration of hospitalization among hospitalized flu patients.

A 2018 study showed that among adults hospitalized with flu, vaccinated patients were 59 percent less likely to be admitted to the ICU than those who had not been vaccinated. Among adults in the ICU with flu, vaccinated patients on average spent 4 fewer days in the hospital than those who were not vaccinated.

Well, it may not be as many as you think. The CDC says the seasonal flu shot effectiveness varies from 19% to 60% depending on the year, but mostly is considerably under 50% effective. The last couple years were under 40%, quite a bit under. So maybe it benefits big pharma most of all. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, that's why they need to emphasize that we get vaccines as much for others as for ourselves. With the flu, whether mild, severe or don't know we have it, they figure we infect 1.2 others. This new one they figure 2.2-2.5 but obviously they don't have as much data as with flu. The cruise ship was 2.2 FWIW. Interestingly measles is much more contagious, as low as 3.7 but as high as 203. That's why school systems have lost patience with the anti-vaxxer parents. There will be some who refuse the vaccine, if and when, but I hope they'll be tested and monitored.

I only started getting a flu shot 2 years ago, Iโ€™m 49 now. I never really got the flu to begin with and when I did I got sick and recovere. Now some people that get the flu get sick and die. Nature does some crazy things we cannot control!

Well, I guess I do trivialize the flu, I'd never gotten a flu shot until a couple years ago when my wife insisted. To me the flu is an inconvenience: I sometimes get to feeling bad, then I get better. End of story. And it's not like the flu shot guarantees you won't get the flu, it merely improves the odds. I've gotten vaccinations in the past, but never felt the flu was worth it. AFATG, I still don't. I did do smallpox and polio, and all of the other childhood diseases.

100,000+ worldwide deaths is more than 60,000 to 80,000 deaths from a flu season in just our country.
This is the panic the dishonest media is making a lot of us panic over.
If you are older and have underlying health problems then you should have a little concern of getting any illness, but otherwise statistically this is insignificant.
The federal govt has not locked down anything, lock downs are all acts of the state governors who are buying into the panic.

You are comparing 70 days of covid-19 against 365 days of a flu season (flu occurs worldwide all year). Come back next year at the end of February and update us on the stats.
According to the CDC: "Most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May."

CDC estimates this seasons flu deaths at 24,000 to 62,000:

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm

Bringing up the flu number just illustrates how carelessly accepting American society is about spreading the yearly flu and trivializing the resulting illness and death. People going to work sick and carelessly infecting others reflects poorly on the lack of a national sick leave policy so sick workers can afford to stay home.
No offense, but I don't think people callously "trivialize" the flu. For one thing, few people are really aware of the number of people who die due to the flu, and resulting complications. Also, a whole lot of people simply can't afford to take time off work just because they don't feel good. And sometimes the flu symptoms are just that: you don't feel very good. Bosses sometimes are less than forgiving if you're taking work off just because "you don't feel good".

No offense, but many people do trivialize the flu. We can tell that due to the low percentage of the population that gets annual flu shots. Those people that are healthy enough to get a flu shot must get it as there are those that cannot get shots. But they still donโ€™t.

The estimated percentage of adults that got a flu shot in 2017-2018 was 37.1%.
