Cheap tires + Speed = Blown tire

Last year around this time I posted how everybody on the highway whether car or truck and trailer were blowing by me and I passed maybe 2 people over several hours on the road with my cruise set at 67 mph. Some here even criticized me for going 67 as to fast.

Today on the way home from a trip in Indiana I have my cruise set now at 65. Coming up from behind me on the highway and passing me is a 1/2 ton truck pulling a trailer that was 30 ish feet long and moving along at a good clip - 75 mph+. He no sooner pulls in front of me and a tire on the drivers side blows. I never seen an actual tire blow before but it was quite a site to see all kinds of **** in the air. It looked like a snow storm of white stuff which I'm not sure what it was other that maybe insulation from a laminated floor perhaps. He realized it right away and pulled off safely on the side of the road.

Any way this made me even more of a believer in maintaining a proper speed and I need to upgrade my tires soon.

Heat and speed are hard on tires not to mention the scrubbing on tight turns. Thumps up to Jayco for putting American made tires on thier trailer.

We will never know what happened, they could have hit road debris, valve stem failure, low pressure, or poorly made tires. I agree most mfg put the cheapest tires available on them.

Reasonable assumption. Entry level trailer=entry level tires.

Jayco is using Goodyear Endurance tires. Even on their entry level trailers. My neighbor just bought a new single axle 20 foot trailer. It has the Goodyears on it. Neighbor said every Jayco he looked at had the Goodyear Endurance tires on them. Just because it's a newer entry level trailer, don't assume it has Chinese tires on it.

Just because it says Goodyear on them doesn't mean they are good quality! I wouldn't trust a Goodyear more than any other cheap tire.

I asked him to do one thing and he didn't do any of them.

All Carlisles BTW.

The higher the speed rating the greater the resistance to heat buildup! We all know heat buildup is the great killer of tires.
Question on your Carlisles, had the been run before at or above the ST speed of 65 mph. I can guarantee I will never tow my 5er at 106 mph, but read all the time people pushing their STโ€™s at 65 to 70.

Personally I believe that ST tires are far inferior to an LT even if the ST has a higher speed rating.

Get replacements that cover the full trailer GVWR. And get tires rated 80+ MPH.

More then likely it was low tire pressure causing the issue and had little to do with speed.
I was headed down a stretch of freeway today that is a high travel path for weekend campers and I have to say that most were towing 70+, we were just driving along in a pickup at 75 and we were getting passed by towers. From my experience and what I see on the interstate most trailers are getting towed along faster then 65.

Regardless of what the facts were it made me be more aware of the situation and how best to try avoid being that guy.

Fact is. Tire can fail at any time, and ANY tire. I rarely run more than 60 MPH. I keep my tires aired to cold specs. I keep a good check on them. I have had 3 tires shread themselves at 60 MPH or less. True. every one of them were in their 4th year. But they were all maintained very well.

Only thing I know to do. it replace them after 3 years.

Good points. This past weekend we saw at least a half dozen vehicles on the side of the road with flats. Every single one was a car.

More like aged out tires not chinese made tires or or or or ..

Every spring well most summer long living by water ways, see em all the time boat trailers parked on side of freeway jacked up tire/wheel missing allot of time even spindle too !
They just park em at the end of last boating season with no maintenance and come spring hit the road on dried up rusted wheel bearings to cracked aged out tires.

Could be the same thing here stated in OP , we all can guess and armchair quarter back and speculate anything... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Everyone has their own comfort zone. Iโ€™m never in any rush to get somewhere while Iโ€™m towing so 60mph in the right lane is plenty fast for me. And I donโ€™t get bothered at all by the number of people passing me.

That's why I went with the new Carlisle RV Trail Radial; good tire and higher speed rating.
