- CampinfanExplorer IIII had both for awhile. Everyone told how great Costco was. I was not impressed. I have been happy with Sams and go there. The weird thing and maybe it is just the local Costco, but they organized things by size. The bags of salt were by the bags of dog food because they were big bags. Didn't make sense to me...made it hard to find what you wanted.

Costco is adding diesel pumps here in Washington.
They added them at one store in Indy last year and they are in the process of doing so at the other. - seaeagle2ExplorerCostco is adding diesel pumps here in Washington.
- ro_sieExplorerI have both the Sams and Costco membership. I like them both. Like the gas stations. Some things I can get at Sams and not Costco. Other things I can get at Costco and not Sams. I buy lots of Christmas gifts from both of them for my grand kids. Plus, no matter where you happen to be, you can usually find ONE of them nearby. Wish they had diesel.

I like the gestapo technique at the exit door at Sam's so that you can leave with a bad taste in your mouth. Great marketing Sam's!
Once, I was leaving Sams and the door guard was too busy having a conversation to pay any attention to me. I walked around her and headed out the door. She caught me about 20 feet out.
I stopped her conversation, though. - mike-sExplorerSam's : Costco :: Walmart : Target

Costco at Sams
Very clever marketing strategy. Wonder how many Costco customers they gained?
Not me, we were not impressed.
I agree. Costco is the McDaddy of the membership stores. Sam's? Well it just isn't. - ol_Bombero-JCExplorer

I've had a business membership with 5 additional associate members on our Sam's membership Card since the late 1980's and always have been very satisfied. Several years ago we went to a Cosco in Florida with some friends who were members. Was not impressed in the least. We signed a register to get membership info and holy cow! For years after Cosco just kept calling and sending emails to me trying to get us to join. No way!
Yes, for a few months until July 4th 2016 Sam's was letting non-Sam's Club who were Cosco members to use their Sam's Club Stores with their Cosco membership card. Must have been good for Sam's as it was reported that they got a very large surge in new members from doing this. We have 4 Sam's Clubs and 2 Cosco's in our area and the amount of cars in Sam's VS Cosco parking lots tells the story as to which is the most desired by about 3 to one per store.
Simply put, a Cosco membership card won't get you into a Sam's Club to purchase goods in the main store as you have to present a membership card at the door when entering and a valid up to date Sam's membership card at the register to be swiped before the Sam's employee can even scan a bar code and enter the first item. The valid membership card activates the register and your name on the card appears on the register's screen! BTW, Sam's Membership Cards have your picture on them so if you don't match the pic, the manager will come to see you and they take it seriously as this finds stolen or lost cards so quickly and efficiently.
Long answer(?) to the OPs question!..:R

You don't have to be a member of anything other than the human race to shop at Sam's Club. If you are not a member, you pay 10 percent more(not including pharmacy).
I believe in California you don't have to pay the extra 10 per cent but must pay in cash.
