This popped up on my Facebook page today. I thought I would share with a group of people who can really appreciate the absurdity.

Not only grossly inadequate method of securing the chain, but also increases the chances of the cotter pin pulling out.

Excellent eloquent observation!

Bet you gleaned that in Rocket Science 101, huh!..:B

Actually this is the way it is done in Hawaii when your wife is riding in the trailer and you are on Maui and descending the road from the top of Haleakala

Good grief, it's just a picture.

I could post a picture of my receiver with a trailer setting on the ball and the chains lying on the ground. Doesn't mean I'd ever hit the road that way.

Was taught years ago to always hook up the safety chains so that they would break away because the if the trailer came unhitched and the safety chains held it would probably cause you to loose control and wreck. Note I no longer follow that advice.

Who said the person was a man? :B

Even if it was hooked up correctly, I'm surprised at the size of that shackle. That shackle is probably rated at no more than 400lbs and also probably bought at HarborFreight.

You guys are all looking at it backwards. That setup is not for securing the safety chains. No this is obviously a well thought out design by a person who is really tired of misplacing the clip when he disconnects the trailer.

If the pic is for real, I'm guessing this is a farmer pulling a trailer around his land where he's not concerned if the trailer comes loose, he just wants ease of use if he's doing alot of connecting/disconnecting.

Then why connect the "safety" chains in the first place?

Maybe just for the fact of not having them dragging?

You all missed the point completely. Its so if the trailer gets in trouble it will self disconnect and not wreck or damage the truck :B

To secure cabinet joints, or for articulated Teddy-bear joints? Which is it? My 5 minute search didn't define the original use.
