Dog Kills one at RV camp If you wonder where Lancaster is, as I did, it is 20 miles NW of LA in the desert.

The shelters are loaded with pits in So Cal. There's definitely no shortage.
And there are far more backyard breeders breeding "pitbulls" than any individual breed. And those people sell them to anyone no questions asked as long as they have the dollars.
