Dont know where to put this

I am wanting to start my own business that will allow me to travel more. My wife will help with the business, but we don't have a lot of money to invest therefore I am looking for options and ideas. We don't want a lot of overhead. What do you guys have in mind? Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
  • An outfit called Southeast Publications prints the RV Park site maps - the 'placemats' that you are given when you first book into an RV Park. Those are provided free to the RV Park, paid for by the local advertising displayed on the placemat.

The Sales Rep can travel wherever he wants, get a two-week complimentary site, while he sells local advertising to be printed on the host RV Park's 'placemat'.

It's commissioned sales, but it fits what you described: travel, low investment, low overhead and your wife can be actively involved.

    Details are here: http://www.southeastpublications.com/index.php/careers

No, I do not work for them. I met a fellow FT-er at Amazon Murfreesboro during their peak who got me thinking, though. A friend of his has been doing this for years and now earns a comfortable living.

    Just a thought.
  • Wildfire support services. Work during the fire season in various places, then off during the winter. So... do wildfire then in winter do RV exterior detailing. You are just using your rig for transpo to the work site so is not a "work" vehicle.

    Another is seasonal park ranger.

Figure out what you like/are talented for, then design mobile business around your "hobby".
  • These are some great ideas. I would go to where my customers needed me. I like the ideas I have heard so far. Some seem doable.
Keep them coming. I am gonna figure something out.
  • I think your idea is doable, but dont expect to make much money at this. Owning and operating your own SUCCESSFUL business is generally a FULL TIME job.

But dont give up...look at what you love doing and see if there is a way to make it profitable.

CAUTION: My RV insurance policy has a specific exclusion for doing ANY sort of business out of the unit. You may want to check your policy carefully. This is one of those things that can come back to bite you later.
  • It's not going to as easy as asking in a RV forum. If it was we would all be doing it.

Whatever you decide on will have to be unique and most likely involve the Internet if you are going to rely on repeat customers.

Most campgrounds frown on in park advertising if not outright prohibit it.

I wish you good luck in your effort..

Are you looking for something that will give you extra money? Or are you looking for something that will support you?

It's very difficult to create a thriving business that will support you locally. It will be that much more difficult to do so when you add in travel.

The trick is to find something that is inexpensive and easy to provide, yet doesn't make people think "oh, that's a great idea, I'm going to go home and make some for myself".

Providing a service is nice, except that services are best promoted by word of mouth. That's harder to manage when you're changing locations constantly.

Where do you want to travel? Do you want to choose the destinations? Or are you willing to go wherever the work takes you?

If you choose a product that sells to a specific group, then you could go on the trade circuit with it. For example, selling dog products and touring the dog show circuits; or something for RVs and traveling to RV shows, Quartzite, etc.

Honestly, I'm not sure if you are going to be able to do this. IMHO I think that in order to make a business successful, you have to have the love for and the dedication to the product, rather than to the travel. If you are just looking for a way to travel more, I would say look for a different job that pays more OR maybe take a second seasonal job and use that pay for more trips outside of that season.
  • Several years ago I met a guy & his wife that had a Going business in their RV. He was a very good photographer and they would travel to car / RV / air shows and take pictures of guys / girls / couples with their toys. And then take the pics back to their RV where she was good with photoshop. She could build a calendar with different pics, business cards with a selected pic or prepare a studio quality pic in a frame for a keepsake. They had high quality cameras, computers and printers and seemed to be doing OK and selling quite a bit of product - their rig was MUCH younger than ours and about 5-steps up in likely cost!! Just a thought.
  • You could do windshield chip repairs. There are several business that supply the complete kits and offer training. There are chips every place you travel, you can do as much want, the equipment doesn't take a lot of room to store and it's not that expensive to get set up. Look on the internet, there are several companies that can equip and train you.
