Double towing in California

Ok I did a search and have read threads but did not get the details.

Questions as it applies to CA only.

1) What should I ask DMV for to have the proper CA license to double tow with a class C license? Doubles endorsement? Is it just a written test?

2) I remember reading an endorsement needed if towing 10,000+ GVWR trailer.... does that apply if each of the trailers are less than 10,000 but might be over in total?
  • These are some tricky areas of the Drivers Code you are getting in to. Here are the laws as I learned it...

    1) Double Towing requires a commerical Drivers License with a double endorsement. (see attached link from CA DMV -- find NOTE on 2nd box right column)
    2) Non-Commerical Class A license is required
    - for TT with GVWR (not actual weight) >10,000Lbs
    - or 5er with GVWR >15,000lbs

to clearly answer you first question -- you can't legally tow double with class C license in CA.

    They still don't.

  • I know a few guys that tow a double with fiver and boat and have never been stopped or ticketed. I had a friend whose son is a CHP and the son said most officers aren't clear just what is legal or not. So, who has been stopped or ticketed in CA?
  • When i had a question about towing doubles in Ca i emailed the CHP valley division and they sent me the answer. I keep the email from them if i ever get stopped. I suggest you do the same. My question wasnt about drivers lic as i have a class A with doubles and triples endorsement. I asked about pulling 2 bumper pulls and the answer was yes i can, have to stay under 65ft. They will give you the correct answer.
  • My calif. friend double towed, 5th wheel and motorcycle. He had to get a medical physical, take a driving test with the Calif. Highway Patrol towing his 5th. wheel (not attched to motorcycle trailer) and had to demonstrate the ability to parallel park the 5th. wheel and take a class A written test:(:(:(
  • Yes looks like a commercial class A is needed. I will need to think about if that is worth the hassle. Maybe just bring two vehicles.

California has always been tough to get a definitive answer...even when you call DMV

And I think I read that the towing laws changed.
