Ideally, the tongue weight should be about 10-15% of the trailer's total weight. You can adjust the weight distribution by moving cargo within the trailer or using a weight distribution hitch. This can help prevent trailer sway and improve your vehicle's handling and braking.
On a related note, I edit videos for my YouTube channel and I'm currently working on a video about trailer safety, including tongue weight. For my video editing, I use Movavi because it's user-friendly, offers great editing tools, and has fantastic customer support. It's a 7yr old post you are responding to.
That said:
- 10% is marginal. 12-15% is good. More is better but other issues usually start to get in the way (most common is the truck can't handle the higher hitch weight.
- Also a WDH won't fix a bad weight distribution. WDH helps with a front truck axle that becomes too light due to hitch weight reducing the front axle weight.
