Dump station fools

Seems like there was a thread about the same general thing recently, but I can't find it so I'll start over.

Today at the dump station, a couple are on the other side of us, dumping their small TT. There is no potable water there. There is a hose on a vertical arm with a reel of hose at the top, so you can pull it out and into your RV if you want. And there is a regular hose spigot facing each lane. With a big sign saying DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER.

So anyway, he finishes dumping. After a minute, I notice he has a nice new looking white drinking water hose out. He proceeds to attach it to the spigot and the wife takes it into the TT to put it in the toilet (I am assuming). I was so stunned that I didn't keep enough wits about me to consider telling them what they were doing wrong. I normally would try to keep my advice to myself, but really, they needed someone to speak up.

I had stuff to do, and people were waiting. When I finished, she came out with the hose and said, "all the lights are still on", which I took to mean they were worrying about the tank level indicators. At that point, we left. I wish I would have said something. I might have gotten chewed out for it, but it would have rolled off my back pretty soon.

My DW says maybe they had a separate hose just for that. Um, I am betting not. Oh well.
Currently RV-less but not done yet.

Everyone's method of dumping tanks and staying clean are different. I use a big pair of green gloves and after being done put them in a bag in that compartment. Before entering the coach my wife meets me at the door with hand cleaner. No matter how careful we are we still get dirty.
Each time you go to a supermarket what is on the handle of the grocery cart, door handles everything you touch in public places.
I have too many times seen someone leave a washroom after doing the number two and not washing their hands. Also people changing babies diapers and not washing their hands. And it seems to be ok to just throw said diaper in the garbage can. Then all that stuff goes to the landfill. Yup I am starting to rant! There are worse things than dump stations.

We'd drive you nuts. We have an old white hose we use for clean up at the dump station and bought ourselves a longer BLUE hose for our drinking water.

Don't be too quick to make a judgement....we also have two white hoses. . . one, an old one, is marked specifically for using at the dump station with our rise out. It is stored in a separate place than our fresh water hose. I suspect this could have easily been the case with the party you observed.

I'm guilty of trying to not let someone fall into the stupid pit by themselves many times. A few or lots of times I could have used a little friendly knowledge.

Bare hands people at the dump here, however a liberal amount of antiseptic is used to wash off. This is kept right in the service bay where the dump valve switches are.

As far as the antics of others go, as long as their actions don't leave a mess for me to deal with, let them got at it & learn from mistakes.

Any medic or RN knows the correct way to remove gloves without contaminating oneself. I assure you, at the dump station, I use "universal precautions"!!

As a (disposable) glove user there is nothing to it. Gloved or ungloved hand you pull back the other hand's glove from at the wrist which inverts the glove; the used side is on the inside. Also think about your shoes...if you are walking around close or in the dump area you can be picking up bacteria and tracking into your RV...do you wash the bottoms of your shoes with antiseptic? I keep a spare pair of shoes in an outside compartment.

I've seen a lot of gloveless people at the rv dump station put stuff away and just drive off; to each his own.

I don't know but I suspect at the dump station the hose is the real probem, not the water. Now one place pumped water for the dump station from a lake, but they had a sign saying as much.

We just mind our own business. One time, hubby and I watched a guy dumping his black tank, no gloves, while eating a granola bar. Almost made me gag, but now we laugh about it. Whatevah!

The water at the dump is the same as is in the rest of the camp. The difference is in the possibly contaminated hose, from being used to flush/ rinse waste. Thats why the sign 'Not Drinking Water' is there.
If you look closely, in nearly all camps/ states you will see a device on the water riser that looks a lot like a regulator. It is an anti siphon device, AKA backflow preventer that will not allow water in contaminated hoses back into the system.
SD law (44:02:09:10-13) requires these devices on ALL water taps, and a potable supply at the dump cannot be closer than 25' to the dump. If a hose is supplied by the camp it cannot be longer than 15' at either the dump or the potable supply.
So. Next time tou see a gadget on the hose bib, know it is not a regulator the last camper left behind, it is a health safety device to protect the water supply.
Noone can do anything about stupid, when you see it, but education of facility is a topic easily broached with the proper manners.

I worry more about those who take the BF preventers assuming they are regulators.

Not the dump station thing but still something that gnaws at me for not being more aggressive in my butting my nose into something that isn't my business;
A nice big dully Dodge pickup backs a 24' travel trailer into a spot next to me. First thing the guy comes over and asks if I have a jack. I asked what kind, he said something he could get the trailer up high enough to unhook from his pickup. I gave him a 5 ton hydraulic...He walked away and came back and asked if I had any blocks of wood? I gave him several of different sizes...He walked away and came back and asked if I had any rags? I drew the line and said no.
Later he obviously wanted to talk and came over and invited himself to sit down and jaw... I asked if he knew that the receiver he had bolted to the stock bumper was only rated to about 350 lbs and tow weight was nothing compared to the weight of the trailer he had.
He shrugged it off and said: thats the thing they put on it when I bought the trailer.... I didn't respond.

I just let people be, if they ask I help. I have several white hoses with one relegated to black tank duties. Also know many who never drink from their freshwater tanks and really aren't too concern with whatever water they put in. It's not that I don't care, it's just that I'm having too much fun to spend time watching what others are doing.

I will wager that 99 if not 100% of the time the spigot with the sign that says Non Potable do not drink, has exactly the same water you put in your fresh water tank. Why do they say not potable? Location and the fact that they cannot monitor the spigot for abuse.

Would I use the same hose? NO! Would I drink out of that faucet? No,but that is me other folks may feel differently.

When I was a small child my fathers uncle,an old time farmer had no plumbing in the house. He had a hand pump on the kitchen sink and it drained into a slop bucket underneath. The plate scrapings and kitchen refuse was also thrown into the bucket. After supper the bucket was taken out to the hogs and dumped into the trouth. Pigs ate it and we ate the pigs. My uncle lived to 103.

I've had people call me rude and to shut my mouth when I tell them they shouldn't drink that water. saw it happen at a state park in Oregon and I just walked away. told my friend I think that guy is going to have the runs tomorrow. and since I never saw the guy again, I don't know for sure if he did or didn't have that problem. he had a motor home and it took a lot of water and we waited and waited for him to fill up his tank. I guess some guys just do not know what it means when it says non potable water. but he should have known what it means when the sign says DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER. some peoples kids!!
