I just turned 60, never bought an extended warranty on anything.
Even the WORSE car I ever owned, a 1974 FIAT...which you likely will NVER see being driven on a public road because it's true FIAT means "Fix It Again Tony"!
Our 4 current cars are all new KIA's with 100,000 mile warranties.
The #1 non-profit consumer advocate group says don't waste your money!
The odds are you’ll never need the coverage, and even if you do, the money you’ll save in repairs won’t come close to what you paid for the added warranty.
A recent Consumer Reports survey found that 55 percent of owners who purchased an extended warranty hadn’t used it for repairs during the lifetime of the policy, even though the median price paid for the coverage was just over $1,200. And, on average, those who did use it spent hundreds more for the coverage than they saved in repair costs.
And J.D. Powers says "keep your money in the bank rther than wasting it on a nebulous extended warranty!"
It comes very close to fraud and flim flam, smoke and mirrors. Especially when a extended warranty is rejected due the the tiny print on the contract AND legal language that heavily biased against you!
US World and News Reports also researched this subject and noted the poor value of extended warranties.
Instead..send that $3000.00 you would have spent on a useless warranty to...

Disagree with *some* of Sooper's opinions - and even his (generic) source "facts"!Caveats:
Price -and the value of the item, vehicle, etc.- should be a *major* deciding factor!
Aftermarket warranties for cars, trucks....and RVs are negotiable.
I never used my 2 year mfgr Warranty on my Jayco, never had any problems (it's pushing 10 years old now) - same for TTs I bought new. (Never bought an extended warranty)
Sooper states sending the $$ for a $3K warranty to him.
*NO* extended warranty is worth more than a couple of hundred bucks,
whether it's on a car, truck, RV - or electronics equipment.
A fool and his money are soon parted - whether it's for the warranty - or for Sooper, LOL!
OK - several posters have indicated vehicle warranties that worked, etc. (like the VW Vanagon).
Would guess Sooper loves his Ferds - every Ferd 6.0 owner who bought an extended warranty made an excellent purchase!
The Ferd diesel forums were full of 6.0 diesel horror stories "back when". Many received new engines - some entire vehicles were repurchased by Ferd. (No monetary reimbursement, however).
Unfortunately - some were even "two time losers".:(
But of course there are Ferd owners - who never had a bit of problem with their 6.0 diesels.
Stopped by a new (independent) diesel shop close to my home.
The owner was a former diesel mechanic from a local Ford dealership.
Had a nice chat with him. He admitted his "bread and butter" was Ferds that were out of warranty.
His 3 bays all had 6.0 Ferds in progress (mostly head gaskets) - and had about 5 in his lot waiting. Most of those had been repaired one or more times by Ferd previously.
Said he didn't see many GMC or Dodge diesels.
At the time I purchased my Dodge CTD, at the end of the 3 year (36K mi) warranty period - a *factory* extended 100K mi warranty (good at any Dodge Dealer) could be purchased for about $120.
Well worth the bucks - I didn't buy, but wish I had (another story).
FIAT is now my RAM's super daddy - and think a few "Tonys" were included in the deal, LOL!
Electronics:
If it's an expensive item - Buy the extended warranty.
Cheap item - roll the dice.
Did that "back when" - when computers & monitors were a lot pricer than now. Sales guy advised - at least getting an extended warranty on the monitor. OK - had regrets on that decision, until it died.
Monitor replaced at the value when purchased - monitors were considerably less when it went kaput - got a nice upgrade at no cost.
Many newer electronics *parts* are "non-exchangable", meaning if it's under mfgr warranty - the entire unit is replaced.
After the mfgr warranty - there is no replacement *part* - you're out of luck.
Relatively new DVR (with tuner) - about $350 item, recently out of warranty. Power supply circuit board failed. There is no replacement - period. Not even a part number available to a "mfgr approved service facility"!
*If* an extended warranty had been available for -say $50.- it would have been a good deal.
Sooooo - buyer's decision.
Who offers the warranty?
What does it cover?
Read the fine print.
Do you trust the company involved?
(some KIA owners report warranty repairs refusal)..:?
Cost -vs- potential return -vs- risk??
For RV's - I'm with Sooper.
Got him by 12 years - and *never* bought any kind of RV warranty..:W
Never got "bit" by failure to do so.
For "other stuff" - weigh your options (& cost)....carefully.
