EZ pass or I-pass

Question

We're Washington State residents planning a cross-country road trip covering almost all the CONUS states (excluding ND, OK, WV, FL).

We need help figuring out if we need an EZ-pass (which state?) or an I-pass and where we should get it.

Do they charge inactivity fees with EZ-pass or I Pass, because I don't know when we'll be on the East Coast again (after this trip)?

I think you are better off with an I-Pass. That is what I have and it includes all of the EZ-Pass coverage plus quite a bit more:

Illinois Tollways
Chicago Skyway
Indiana Toll Road
Ohio Turnpike
Pennsylvania Turnpike and branches
New Jersey Turnpike
New York State Thruway
Massachusetts Turnpike
Maine Turnpike
All other tollways that accept EZPass in the Northeastern US

Maryland charged me for a transponder (I remember it to be around $40 bucks) and a $1.50 fee per month. The batteries go dead in the things after 4 or 5 years, so you get the privilege of buying as new one.

Either way, pick up an I Pass or EZ Pass. You get discounted tolls and you save a lot of time using it. You can close the account if you don't need it anymore.

EZ Pass and I Pass rates and plans vary from state to state. Indiana I Zoom (which is in the EZ Pass family)will send you as many transponders as you want free. And there are NO FEES if you use a credit card and a checking account as a back up.

NY charges no fees for the transponders or account maintenance as long as you have a credit card registered for automatic "top ups" when your balance drops below a certain set point, usually $10. The top up is normally $25. Heavy toll users may have higher limits.

No inactivity fees (yet, anyway) on I-Pass.  We still have ours but have lived away from IL for 2 years. Used the I-Pass last summer, but only on one day of travel.
