Fire tools

In an activity where a fire is such a large part of why we do it how come finding simple fire tools is near impossible?

How many use nothing but a stick that they have found? Oh sure you can go into a speciality store & find really nice (expensive) sets of fireplace tools but to find a simple poker, a long handled wood gripper or a bellows is impossible.

I have both. The poker I stole from the house. The wood gripper I found in a Canadian Tire store for $15.

You would think that every RV supplies retailer would have these things.

Great topic for the *Around the Campfire* forum! (Pun intended)

Maybe this should be a poll......

"How many use nothing but a stick"....etc.?...:R

I prefer the fire dance - get in there and kick the wood around.

Keeps your feet warm....:W

General RV used to sell a very good Made in Michigan Poker, alas my wife died before they started carrying it and I'm not into making a campfire just to have a campfire (She was, I'd build the fire, she's maintain it).

It ws heavy duty rod with a heavy hook just shy of the point.

I also carry Axe. Sledge. assorted wedges. Electric Chain Saw. Other saws. And a propane powered fire starter..
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

We respond to a six year old thread because the subject is timeless and still relevant.

An AMES floral round point shovel is my main fire tool. It is 42 inches long with 6 inch wide blade. Long enough to reach into the fire to move pices of wood or scoop up hot coals for cooking or baked potatoes. I like to use dutch ovens for baking rolls, cakes and pizza. I also like to cook using the campfire.

My favorite tool is my battery powered air pump for our air mattress makes a real good blower for stoking the fire. Start the fire set the blower on the ground near and instant fireblower. Really gets it hot fast.

YOu don't need fire tools. I carry a shovel and a pot lifter for a Dutch Oven. That's it. Some people bring chainsaws to go camping. Try a small fire and sitting next to it. Get the rocks out of the way.

I carry a small axe or hatchet sometimes to split kindling. When people start drinking I hide. it.

My trailer came with a fire poker.
Also doubles as an awning hook.

Ever since I made my own first poker anyone who sees it and burns wood wants one.

It's ridiculously simple, I cut the last 12" - 16" of the top end of a broken shovel handle (well worn and smooth) then carefully bore a 3/8" hole straight up the center about 4" deep or as long as the drill bit is long. Then epoxy a 24" long piece of 3/8" rod into the hole in the handle. Then bend the last 1" - 1.5" of the rod over 90 degrees.

What you end up with is a poker long enough to not singe your knuckles, with a handle large enough to get a good solid grip on and it's robust enough to actually accomplish something.

We use an old steel golf club. Works fine with insulated grip. Been using the same one for years.

+1 Friend bought for us at thrift store for $1. Been using it for 6 or 7 years.

Only read page one of this thread.

We bought a set of fireplace tools at a Thrift shop. Got good quality ones for about a dollar each. Left the little shovel at home as have a folding shovel in the RV we can use if needed.
