Flat tow or dolly?

We're in the process of buying a new motorhome. Up to this point we have always flat-towed our vehicle. Now we are thinking of using a tow dolly so that the car, a 2014 Equinox, can be driven onto the dolly with no extra shifting or pulling fuses. Can I get some opinions as to what people prefer and the pros and cons of both methods.
  • Thank you everyone for your input. We have made a decision to go with a tow dolly. I guess we'll find out soon enough if we like it or not.
  • I've done both. Dolly for 3 years, flat for 4 years. I would flat tow if possible. Dolly only if necessary. However, I would dolly rather than not tow.

Someone said you can back up a dolly forever. That is not true. The dolly has a swivel pan or turning wheels and if backed far they will turn and bind.
  • IMHO There is no way I would drag a tow dolly along with a toad when the toad can be hitched directly to the MH. Why invest in hook up drag along and unhook another piece of equipment ?

    C.B.
  • Multiple vehicles may be towed, 4 down one vehicle only.

Changing toads with a dolly tow will likely be free! New 4 down toad results in removal from the old toad and installation of the gear in the new toad and maybe buying a new base plate. Likely a tidy sum!

I doubt there is much difference in the hock up time.

As noted previously, the "investment" for 4 down far exceeds that of a dolly and that "investment" is unique to the specific toad.

The hew and cry about where to put it is a red hearing. Role it under the back bumper and carry on. There is not a lot of activity taking place at the rear end of the coach!

Bottom line, each method has both pros and cons. The upshot is that the OP is the person who will be using the equipment and therefore that equipment must be tailored to that person's specific needs. There is no right of wrong!
  • I've done both, and given choice, I'd dolly in a heartbeat.

To flat tow, it will cost you $4500 minimum incl brakes and a PITA to connect all that stuff, and when you get done, you cannot back it up.

To dolly tow, it will cost you $1,200 for a dolly, that's it ! And you can back it up in a straight line forever.

And I will drive it on a dolly, and have it strapped down before you get the pins in the tow bar !
  • Flat towing does not require loading and unloading from dolly. Flat towing does not have issues with storage of dolly while on the road campsites.
You can install a switch in the fuse location so as not to have to pull fuse, just throw the switch.
Dolly users should have trailer hitch on toad so as to move dolly around with out hooking up to MH. Dollies require addition al maintenance.
  • If want to take the PT Cruiser with us, I put it on the dolly.
If I want to take the truck with us, I tow it four down.
When I had a Jeep, if we were going 500 miles or less one way, I towed it four down. If we were going long distances, I had a trailer to load it on to save wear and tear on those oversize tires (them things are EXPENSIVE!!).
So, IMO, the choice is controlled by a couple of factors;'
    1. The requirements of the vehicle.
    2. Personal preference.

The main reason to put a car on a dolly is if it cannot be towed four down or you are only going to do it a couple times and rent the dolly.
If all you have to do is go through a certain shift sequence and pull a fuse to tow it four down... tow it four down.
