Gardeners? Tomatoes???

Okay, I've gardened a long time. We are usually down in Florida from mid Jan to early April.

Does anyone grow tomatoes down there and bring them back and have early tomatoes? If so, what variety? Our plant out date in NY is about May 20th earlier with help (greenhouse type thing or move it inside/move it outside every night).

I am hoping to not have this HUGE plant in our 20 foot trailer to drag around as we move about every week (we work down there doing art shows). I realize what my limitations are with a smaller plant (less tomatoes but still early for NY). I know that if we are in northern Florida early on we will have to watch the weather, etc.

I really want some early tomatoes either down there or early in NY.

  • I'm from Wisconsin and when I went down to Florida for my first Winter I picked up some tomato plants from the store to plant in pots to keep outside of my MH.

Trust me don't waste your money or time bringing or buying tomato plants. The sun is so hot even in during their winter that you can have a tomato just start turning red in the morning and by noon they have split apart. Gardening as we Midwestern folks know doesn't exist in Florida. :(

After 2 trips to Florida THIS is the only vegetable that will grow in a pot there and actually the Florida sun will grow them to the size of giant mutants!!

Up North these only grow to be 1/10th this size!

BTW: The fresh home grown tomatoes and green beans taste 'awful' in Florida be prepared for that! :W
  • I am going to do some tomato experiments this year. I was going to start them from seed but if I can find a patio sized plant, I will just buy it (and pamper it).

I've grown basil and parsley every year. Nothing like home made pesto. I've grown lettuce (believe it or not...heat resistant varieties)...I got some lettuce out of it but it did go to seed too quick...

Thank you for your input...is that a hot pepper?
