Generator Question

Newb here with a generator question. I received the following Champion generator as a gift.

1. Is this sufficient enough to run power on a 24' trailer (lights, accessories, ac, etc)?
2. Will this unit be too loud for campgrounds? I don't want to be "that guy" lol.

Welcome Beerlord! :C Read up all you can on these generators, then go buy 2 Hondas. Quietest, lightest, least amount of trouble of any of them, Honda dealers everywhere, etc. etc. But...most expensive. As far as being quiet- listen to the Honda and then listen to the comparable Champion- NOT as quiet. At least in my research.

i own this generator, along with a Honda 2000i.

NO WAY would i subject anyone in a campground, to the loudness of this Champion model. not even myself.

but that's because i choose to be a GOOD neighbor, as opposed to some of the other responders.:R
i also only run the Honda for 2-3 hours once every few days to recharge the batteries.

i use the Honda for campgrounds and the Champion for home backup power.

now, i would have no problem with any of Champion's INVERTER generators.
like their 2000w or their 3100w inverter generators.

I'm not afraid of a loud generator... I almost never let my Yamaha idle. If it's going to run, it's going to run wide open under full load to run my 125 amp charger. If it's hot, the twins are going to run wide open under a pretty good load powering the 13.5 on the roof, once that 13.5 is going I can't hear anything else.

There ya go! Run that gererator and run all the other neighbors right out of the park! One less person to share the brew! And one less person to fuss about our melodies singing in tune with that generator!:B :W Sounds like we can just howell at the moon all night now! :E

Also come electronics don't like those generators.

What electronics don't like normal fixed-speed non-inverter generators? The output is a sine wave, theoretically perfect but in practice probably somewhat distorted and noisy, but a reasonable approximation none the less. It shouldn't be all that much different than a typical Onan generator built into a motorhome.

I support the need for generators at home... One of the things I did before I got an RV was buy a small generator, Just enough to keep my beedroom A/C working, (Small window unit).

When I got the RV I "upgraded" the house electrical. new higher quality, bigger, breaker box (Square D instead of Push-Matic) Generator transfer switch with load meters (very nice) proper INLET on the back of the house.

Matching OUTLET in the basement of the RV, Big long custom made (Ok home made) extension cord from RV pad to INLET.

Came in mighty handy on occasions. All those upgrades
Box $$$
Transfer panel and inlet $$$
Cord $$$
Mods to RV $$$ (Even though I did the labor, ok drop a $)

Warm wife (Power went out Dec 31) PRICELESS.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

I have a Champion 2000W Inverter. I'm really impressed with it. Runs as quiet as the Honda 2000 I used at work. You can buy 2, maybe 3, Champions for the price of a Honda or Yamaha.

A rule about gens; If your the one getting the power from it, it wont seem nearly as loud as it does to your neighbor.
Frankly, even the all hallowed Honda's are loud if your the guy having to listen to it.

No... Campground doesn't have hookups.

Based on your screen name, I'll park next to you and ignore the noise of your generator. :B

Welcome to the forum.

Me too! After we all get a "few" down us, we'll all be singing in harmonious melody to the music of the generator! Sounds like we're going to have a blast!

Welcome!

Question for the OP? Other than camping, do you have a use for the generator? If you do, I'd keep it. That's a good machine.

In 2006, when we purchased our Springdale TT, the dealer threw in a generator free. Evidently this company was going out of business and local generator company/dealer gave them to the RV dealership to give away with every new camper sold. So we got this one.

I looked it up on the Internet and it did not have very good reviews, and I though,... oh boy, I was just handed a piece of junk I'll have to eventually figure out how to haul away.

Well, that was 11 years ago and I've never even changed the spark plug to that generator yet. Actually, I used it just yesterday. It ran for 7 hours at home because our power was out. It didn't skip a beat.

In my opinion, all those nay-sayers about that generator were completely wrong. I've used it for all sorts of things, but mainly around the house for power outages. We've never used it camping as we always have electric camp sites.

So, if you have another purpose for the generator, hang on to it. It's designed for operation power tools at a construction site. (or anything else you may want).

Loud? Ehh! who cares! Mine is not as loud as a push lawn mower, but it ain't quiet either! Your's will probably be the same.

Really, before discarding it, think of the possibilities it has and uses it might offer when not camping!

Here's mine, 11 years old and still works great! Not bad for a free-bee!

I kept the box and use it for a cover to keep dirt and dust off it when not in use. Not bad for an 11 year old box.

By the way, one of the coolest uses I ever saw someone use a portable generator for was back in 1971 when the church I was going to decided to have a baptism. The church did not have a baptistry, but someone had a creek than ran through their farm. The day of the baptism, everyone gathered along the creek bed when 2 pick-up trucks pulled up. One pick up truck had a portable generator in the bed and pulled away from the gathering spot and laid out a couple hundred feet of extension cord from the truck to the spot where everyone was gathering. The second pick up pulled in with the church organ in it's bed. Those guys loaded the church organ and brought it out to the meeting spot. They plugged in the organ via the generator. The generator was far enough away, you could barely hear it running. They cranked the organ and every had a great time!

So you know, you just never know what a generator may come in handy!

Actually an increase of 3dB doubles the sound intensity but a 10dB increase is required before a sound is perceived to be twice as loud.

The decibel scale is logarithmic, every 3 decibel is twice as loud... something to keep in mind.
