I've been thinking off/on for the better part of a year about upgrading. I was all set on waiting on the new 2015 F350's, when I hear about a 2014 F350 SRW longbed 4x2 Lariat for a GREAT price. It's a few hours away so I want to do some research before I head over.According to Ford, this truck has 16.3 lb towing capacity, and either a 3470 or 3970 payload (based on 10k or 10.5k GVWR). I don't want/need 4x4 and not really wanting DRW.I've been looking at the new CARBON 297 TH, 11.5k dry, and 2600 payload. At this time we do not have toys, maybe we will get a 1000lb golf cart one day. Family of 4, weekend trips mostly, maybe one long trip/year. Florida camping, with a trip to NC every now and then.Thoughts?

I guess I want to caution you regarding the payload numbers. The numbers you quoted are from the brochure which is kinda like the dry weights of RVs. They are not the real world.Ford's brochure weights are based on a standard equipped XL model with zero options. Since you are looking at a Lariat. The lariat (same as mine) has about 4-500lbs of options. If you add in the diesel option, that"s another 500lbs. We are now close to 1000lbs of options that will be deducted from the 3970/3470 payload. You may end up with an actual payload of 2500-3000lbs. When you look at the truck, look at the cargo capacity sticker on the door post. This is the real payload for the truck.Lets look at your TH. You have the numbers a little wrong. The 2600lbs is the dry pin weight not cargo capacity. Your cargo capacity is 4248lbs. Realistically your pin weight will increase when you load your TH. May get closer to 3000lbs. Plus add in the 4 family members of ~500lbs, hitch and other "stuff. If the F350 is a diesel and has the 10,000lb GVWR then you will probably exceed your trucks payload rating.I guess I'll close with that. Just don't go by brochure weights. Look at the actual numbers and take everything into consideration.S

SPUD, yes it's the diesel, with the 11500# GVWR package, which gets me the 3970 payload. It also has the 3.31 gears, camper package, 5th wheel prep package, switches and the lariate ultimate package.I'd be willing to consider another TH, if I can find a smaller one with the separate garage. The 297 is just the smallest one I've found yet. Going to look at truck in the am, it's 3 hours away.....

Take a look at the yellow cargo capacity sticker on the drivers door post and it will give your actual payload then go from there. Should be somewhere around 3300lbs.Good luck. Well at 14,100# GVWR on the TH, I would say safely in the capacity of that TV.

Thanks for all the great advice! I think we have settled on a shorter/lighter FW bunkhouse - Wildcat 312qbx. It comes in just under 10k lbs and 35'. So we have plenty o truck. Wife made some valid points about longer units in some of our state parks. Now just to sell our hybrid TT so that we can place an order :)

Have the selling dealer get a picture of the tire and loading sticker. I did that for my Suburban before buying it. :)

Start with the RV first. Once you know what and how much you need to tow then look for a truck that will handle the job.

Ignore specs. What matters is what is written on the truck. Options, etc can have a huge impact on published specs. Consider the specs equal to a trailers dry weight, while the truck door sticker is closer to wet weight (still missing you and anything you put in the truck).

I don't want to be the stupid newbie, and I've been reading all morning. But now you have me more confused :) The Ford brochure says payload is 4220, why the difference. IS the tire sticker more accurate, it stated the total weight off occupants and cargo should not exceed 3637, how does this equate to the payload number in the Ford specs?
