As an LEO, I have had the opportunity to visit a "super max" prison where the worst of the worst are sent that DON'T get a death sentence. It definitely doesn't have a gym, it has a "yard" that inmates can get outside. It's about 100' X 100' and surrounded by 15' high razor-wire fence or other buildings, as well as fencing across the top. There are several guard towers with snipers and they don't utilize rubber bullets. This is for the regular inmates.
The ones that are in solitary confinement have an 8 X 8 cell with a window that is 4" across by about 4' tall, a concrete bed and a 2" piece of mattress, a toilet and a small sink (8"). They are out of their cell for 30 minutes each day and can go into a yard, which is a 10' X 20' room with 15' block walls and the top is open to the sky, but does have razor-wire fencing across the top. They get to shower twice a week.
It's not really a nice place to be, it is NEVER quiet, it is never dark and someone is watching you most all the time. There is always a way to GET to someone, so you never feel secure.
I was never a proponent of the death penalty, but I do feel that if it is a crime where torture is used or a child is involved, then the death penalty is called for.
