Will the hot water heater light on Lp if no water in tank?

"Hot Water Heater" bugs me too, but not enough to get as ugly as some of these posts.

I've never really understood the objection to "hot water heater." It's the heater for the hot water system, and so that name seems to me entirely reasonable.

Yes, it will light and heat. Some steel tanks are lined with an anti-rust coating and that will be ruined. Aluminum tanks may not be lined, so other than possible warping, I do not know what damage would occur. The propane will be much worse I assume than the electric element as the element is not touching the tank, but the propane flame is.

I accidentally had the electric on all winter, but did not keep camper plugged in too often as solar was on roof, but did have it plugged in plenty long enough to find out... and when I put water in there were no leaks. I t was well after that until I realized the electric was on, when I tried running the AC off a gen and kept tripping the breaker with both AC and tank on.
When gas is on at least it makes noise.

Actually .....NOT the T&P but open a faucet Hotside so air is bleed out of hotside/Water heater fills to correct water level and maintains the AIR POCKET that helps control pressure increases when heating water

Opening the T&P can disrupt the formation of that air pocket

It is surprising how many people do not realize that.

not mentioned thus far is that when you lite your hot water heater after not being used for awhile one should always check the relief valve on the hot water heater to make sure all air is purged. If no water comes out your tank is empty. DO NOT TURN THE HEATER ON. If this is the case.
