INFORMATION ABOUT RVING WHEN WIDOWED/SINGLE

Just posted this a few days ago. I'm a single RVer. I bought a 'B' for my first one. Problem #1. It was too tall to fit in a parking garage and too long to fit in a single metered space. Those situations popped up just shopping for groceries. Problem #2. More than once, I parked for a few days to see the sights in an area and returned each day to find my spot taken by someone else. I now own a 'C' and pull a Jeep toad. Now the 'C' stays where I put it and the Jeep and I go shopping and/or exploring.
If there was a huge difference in price it might be worth it, but there isn't.
I've always been single so being alone doesn't bother me.

There are a few RVing groups for 'older' singles. These are not dating groups. They RVing together at different places and do lots of activities - hiking, biking, potlucks, etc. There are some for men and women and some just for women. I can't tell what your are :).

SOLOS is another group. Google them. There are many full-timer singles out there. Go for it! :) Other questions about full-timing - look on the full-timing section of this forum. Good luck! It's a great lifestyle.

1. HAVE AN EXIT PLAN. Buy a used B+ if you do not like it, try something else.

2. I know one couple who have a VERY expensive motor home. Every 5 years or so they purchase a used B+ and visit AK for the summer leaving the MH parked. After the AK trip they sell the B+ for about what they paid for it. Better gas mileage and less wear on the MH.

1. You will be FULL TIME. I found that a TT is best for me. As a FT you have a lot of time to see the USA. 52 weeks a year. I stay about a week at one place and use my truck to visit (day trip) within 100 miles radius. My TT is my "home" that I only move about 500 miles at a time.

2. My first FT TT was 30' without slides. I found that I felt "cramped" in the TT. So after two years I got a 33' TT with two large slides. I now am not cramped.

3. My TV has a fiberglass topper so I can store "junk" and also use as a "tent" (advantage of TT over 5th) if I want to camp some place in the back woods where my TT will not fit. Like when I drove the 900 miles RT on the Haul Road in AK to the north shore oil fields.

4. Get a GOOD hitch such as the Hensley Arrow. I can tow at 70 MPH with one hand. 18 wheeler do not cause any sway.

Finding parks along the road is no problem. Some tips: Move on Sun-Thurs rather than Friday or Saturday. Arrive at next destination early (before 4pm). Call ahead to make sure they have vacancy. Also good to arrive before dark for safety reasons if you travel alone. I would not feel safe boondocking alone. Price will depend on the type of campground and location. We use city, county, state and Federal or Corps of Engineers campgrounds. We also use discount cards like Passport America, Good Sam and KOA. For Federal campgrounds if you are eligible, get the America the Beautiful senior or disabled pass to use at Federal parks or Corps of Engineers Campgrounds. You can locate these campgrounds on www.recreation.gov Using a combination of state, corps of engineers and commercial campgrounds we usually average $30-$35 per night for campgrounds. In popular tourist areas it can run up to $100 per night for commercial campgrounds. Just shop around. I use Google Maps for routing, www.woodalls.com for finding campgrounds. www.rvparkreviews.com for campground reviews and CoPilot app for GPS. FMCA and Good Sam have chapters for singles.

Most of the Class B's will handle a small toad. I drag a Jeep Wrangler behind my Roadtrek and never had any problems.

Caravan'd once with a single gal who had a little motorized 3-wheel scooter she hung on the back of her Class C. But after seeing my Jeep she bought a used one for herself.

One might consider a small scooter or motorcycle, or an electric bicycle as well. They're easy to deal with on any size RV. When I take my motorcycle I haul it on a small trailer; my motorized bicycle just hangs on a bicycle rack when I take it.

I don't like to break camp whenever I need to drive somewhere. For me, there would be 2 choices:

A. Tow a car behind a motorhome
B. Use a van or truck and have a towable RV, trailer or fifth wheel

I know two solutions that work: A toad, or going with a class "B" van.

A class "C"... I've heard the spectrum from even a short 23-24 footer being too large to use, to one being OK running toadless with a 30 footer.

I personally am leaning towards one of two solutions:

1: Buying a short class "C" now, then eventually buying a Jeep Wrangler for my daily driver and that would function as my toad.

2: Trading in my current daily driver (a half ton pickup truck), buying a one ton of the same length, and going with a truck camper.
