For those interested....out of Memphis and heading east. I like secondary roads so we went down 100...and ran into a pipe wrench..came out of a guys pick-up. Ruined the front bumper on our rental. We'll see how that works out. Sheriff was on scene, etc. Got as far a Lawrenceburg and called it a day. Sucky motel but we have stopped scratching now. Up and rolling early enough and decided enough is enough..got on I64 n 75...and pounded it out thru Atlanta and down to Macon, Georgia. Now off to Savannah for two days and then to St Augustine for two nights...to meet up with an .Net member.

Rats...momas is closed today, Wednesday. Open at 6am tomorrow. We'll likely hit either Central or BB Shop. Beale St...that was a sorry excuse. Few places open..and loads of street people. Did 3 hours in the Civil Rights Museum. Man that messed us both up. No one mentioned the carousel at the Children's Museum. Drove into Arkansas too....best meal tip? Brother Justine for breakfast.

Off to Nashville tomorrow.

X2 on BBQ shop. I liked Central also

Shop has the best sauce, central the best meat, Rendezvous the most unique ribs (I've eaten hundreds of plates of ribs all over the country, never ever anything like theirs).

But I have that romantic yearning for a sip out of a barrel, drawn by an old man...bib coveralls...no teeth.

And tomorrow morning..Tuesday the 30th...off to Memphis.

You enjoy a good whiskey so I have to urge you to go to Nelson's Green Brier Distillery while you are in Nashville. Its downtown not far from Broadway St. They produce a Whiskey that they age in Sherry barrels, Belle Meade Sherry Bourbon they call it. Yes, I know true Bourbon is produced in Bourbon county KY. so lets not argue the point of what is Bourbon. Excellent spirit.

I also have to urge you to take the time to go to Jack Daniel's distillery while you are in Nashville. Its not that far for a good day trip and the tasting tour is very informative and educational on how to taste whiskies. My favorite is No. 27. Not cheap but worth it for enjoyment factor alone.

And yes, there is a legal definition of what is Tennessee whiskey, just like Bourbon.

Bourbon does not have to be produced in Bourbon County KY. It does not even have to be produced in KY (contrary to popular belief)

When a person makes their own sauce...it's a mop...and my mops are always dependent on what I have in hand. I like to try all kinds of things, so different bbq's are just part of that. I like a clean bbq...meaning the small bone shards have been removed. I like clean places and people at the counter that are happy to be there. And talk...man, she loves to talk. I can say that cause she doesn't read this stuff!

Doc...high praise..thanks.

Gary, the less than wonderful barbecue places are the one's frequented by tourists, Corky's bbq and The Rendezvous. They are OK but not near being the best.

I have not been to the bbq places that Bobbo has mentioned and it's good to know that there are other excellent places.

I have been in Moma's BBQ enough that I am on a first name basis with the two owners, Danny and Kenny (they call me Doc since I am a retired Pharmacist). While not on a first name basis with Fat Larry (yes, Larry owns the place), he has sat down at our table and we have had a long discussion. Note: Larry likes to talk.

Don't forget that BBQ tastes are as varied as the all outdoors. ๐Ÿ™‚ What some people think is fantastic is yucko to someone else. Some people actually like their BBQ sauce cooked on the meat. ๐Ÿ™‚

And BBQ sauces differ depending on where you are. Personally I prefer the Carolina sauces that are light on the tomato sauce.

The best BBQ in the Memphis area is
sandwices - Moma's BBQ on Stage Rd in Bartlett. A little mom and pop shop
ribs - Fat Larry's BBQ on Summer Ave in Bartlett. A little mom and pop shop
