is there an easier-to-use sewer cap?

I used a gate latch with two small bolts. Problem solved. Cost $4.00

Another solution is to use a short clear plastic pipe or a angled fitting like we use off the rv hookup. We attach the cap and as needed our drain pipe to that. No surprises and we can see how the draining is going.

Been at this for awhile, here’s my take:
1. On the hose/female connector, I removed mold flashing on the inside of the tabs with an xacto knife. Don’t remove too much or it won't lock in place.
2. Grease the same tabs, the inner face, the gasket and the mating surfaces on the coach side with silicone grease. Keep the grease away from the gripping part because it will make it very hard for your hand to get any traction. For that reason I don’t use spray. I would not use any petroleum base products, it can cause swelling or deterioration of plastic or rubber parts. You can get a small container of silicone grease in the plumbing dept.
3. Using nitrile gloves (maybe others, too) helps the grip as long as you stay away from the silicone grease.

BTW- that same grease works great on latches. Wipe it on then wipe it off so it doesn’t smear. One more cent

I have two of 'em (If I have not tossed 'em) I can give you my opinon of 'em.. (JUNK) They were a total waste of money.
The pliers that both I and one other (Michigan member) posted. WORK and I mean WORK they are the perfect size.. I highly recommend them.

While you're replacing your cap, I recommend also adding a twist on valve. These things work great and they're good insurance against accidental spillage.

Modifying caps or using worn out ones, could be the reason there is ones laying along the road.

I just filed the slots deeper in my cap which unloads the pins. Boom, fixed.
