i also like the Subaru but the head gasket issue ....just not sure

That's why I would not want a 6 cylinder Subaru. I have never heard of a head gasket issue with the 4 cylinder. In the past, we owned an Outback SUS (Sport Utility Sedan) and a couple of Outback Wagons. We had no problems whatsoever!

I'll vote for the CRV as well. We bought ours new in 08 and have replaced the battery once and the wiper blades each year. Great mileage and you can do some limited four wheeling with it.

Wives CRV...Changed battery (7 years old) is the only thing we've done to it besides what is in book for maint.

EXCEPT right headlight bulb goes out about once a year for some reason.

We used to have an '06 Jeep Liberty CRD. It was a GREAT little car! But, the key word is LITTLE! It just didn't have the cargo capacity I wanted. I found it to be absolutely reliable.
My Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited has been totally reliable, even though it has been modified in several ways.
In fact, I have owned several Jeeps, from Jeepster Commandos (C101) to CJ models to Wranglers. The only reliability problems I ever had was with the Buick engine in one of the Jeepsters.
Personally, given the choice between a Jeep and a Honda (ANY Honda) I would take the Jeep every time!
Or, I would get a manual transmission Subaru Outback or Forester. Yes, they ARE towable 4-down with the manual transmission!
I would get the 4 cylinder. I don't care for the 6 cylinder Subarus.

I agree with the others. My CR-V is the ideal toad as well as the ideal car.

According to Consumer Reports it's the CRV hands down. Not even close.

For whatever reason, Jeep has never been able to get a good handle on quality and long term reliability. It's a shame.

Go with a CRV if you want riding comfort, good gas mileage, and reliability.

I've got a 2006 Jeep Liberty. Easy to tow but the mileage of my Liberty is no that great. Since you will be using this car as a commuting vehicle I would check gas mileage between the two.

I know owners of both. For reliability, I'd take the CRV hands down.
