Keep your stuff locked up, folks.

I was parked near a friend's place (in a "good" neighborhood where houses are $400k, ironically), walked up the driveway, and just in 8-10 seconds after I left, there were people out of a car and were reaching for the generator in my truck's bed, stopped by the fact that the generator is held in place with a decent chain/cable assortment. I walked back out, and they hopped in their little Mazda and sped off.

Always keep your stuff locked up. Had I just had the thing unsecured, some guys would be scoring a nice wad of meth at their dealer right about now.

Lesson for me: Time to consider a truck cap.

Just warning people that thieves can come out extremely quickly to steal something if they think it is unsecured.

I've heard the same rule for shopping at any of the big box hardware stores applies as well.

I didn't say anything about shooting anyone. Just could be able to hold them until the law got there. If they ran they ran..............

Even though I have a CC permit (which is intended to keep me, and my family vertical), I wouldn't be drawing and firing on people stealing it for any reason unless they were a threat towards my person (where I can say repeatedly that "I was in fear of my life" honestly to police.) The lawyer bills, defense attorneys, and bad press (Austin is very liberal... there would be picketers saying how the thieves were misguided and just deserved peoples' love) would be orders of magnitudes of what a replacement generator would cost. Plus, if it does get stolen, I pay my deductible, and it gets replaced, likely with the same generator Pianotuna has. Then, there is the issue of shot placement, crossfire in a residential area, and many other really bad things.

Oh... Texas thugs shoot back. Since they really don't care about things like gun regulations, there is a good chance they might be packing a lot more firepower.

I tend to make sure things are well secured, with defense in depth. Yes, a thief can get the generator, but they will be using an angle grinder on both handles, then having to make multiple cuts underneath the genset to get at the security cable threaded through there, not to mention the wheels.

Problems of conscience aside, by the time the legal problems you'd have from killing a person snatching a generator are over you'll probably wish you'd have just let them take the damned thing.

once confronted and they get in my face it isn't about a generator any more.
Welcome to my home, that door you just broke down was there for your protection not mine.

That is for sure! Even though they should be shot. It's not worth ruining your life for and the grief it would cause your own family.

As someone who technically lives in a "bad neighborhood" (i.e., low income), I'll repeat what I tell my co-workers all the time:

Why would the thieves bother stealing in the bad neighborhood? - there's nothing worth stealing unless you want drugs and then you're risking stealing from a drug dealer. So of course they're going to your "good neighborhood" (i.e., high income) to steal - there's so much more stuff to choose from!

If I was looking to score a quick theft, that good neighborhood is where I would go.

They are learning that if you want to steal the good stuff, go to the neighborhoods where the good stuff is.

City dweller.
Pretty much got the memo already:(.

Last year feeling ultra comfy in my surroundings a junior miscreant stole my I phone 4S @ my campsite. I know it was a 4 since I was thinking of getting a 6 when the summer was over.

Also know exactly who the kid was as he called me over the winter to ask me to remove my phone block:R.

Sighhhhhhhhh. Long story short it takes all kinds and it's amazing the cojones some walk with. Don't think meth or deprived economic background entered his issues either.
