Keys! Really People?

One gripe I've had since buying the new Vengeance is something I keep forgetting to bring up here on the forums. But today, I finally remembered. Let's face it. RV.net is a wonderful place to just blow off some steam about petty little things regarding our campers. But really manufacturers? Can we not get some organization with our keys?

How many keys do I have for our new Vengeance? two? four?

NO! I have eight freaking keys for all my doors and compartments. Four keys are the thick Global Link keys for the regular doors. I have a CH751, a regular door Schlage, and two other smaller keys. Doors, rear garage door, outside shower, compartments, etc. etc. etc.

This is a small gripe and I know all these doors come from different manufacturers but eight keys is getting downright silly. Tonight I'm headed to Home Depot to get some padlocks for the garage door so add a ninth key to the key rings tomorrow. :S

I have one key to start the eng, one for dead bolt, another for the regular door lock, one for baggage doors, one for gas cap, one for tow bar and a specialized key for hood and genset compartment. That is 7 keys. I always wondered what that weight does hanging off of your ignition switch.

8... great googily moogily... I have 3 and find that to be annoying. I have 2 identical looking keys, one for the main door, one for the outdoor kitchen. They both look the exact same and I ALWAYS guess wrong, no matter which one I am trying to open.

I have a third key for the storage hatches... at least that one looks different.

I'm guessing if you have 8 different things to lock, you are probably paying a decent amount of money for your rig. You would think they could order all the locks from a single company and use the same lock cylinder...

Just take a hammer and a punch and knock out all the key holes.

Then use a screwdriver to open each lock.

Problem Solved.

(P.S. this is just a joke.... Mostly,,, this what we used to do with trunk locks on our cars back in the day. And, I still know people that do it with the locks on the compartment doors of their campers. But, I really didn't expect anyone here to do that )

I did the entry and storage locks all keyed alike, then I got the the receiver locks that are keyed to my truck ignition key, next is a couple of the pad locks keyed to the truck ignition key, less and less keys....

We only have two keys for our Jayco, after matching the main door, bathroom door, and the pass through to the outdoor kitchen. Only reason we still have a 751 key is for the outdoor shower. The cyclinder was to short to swap it out.

All thanks to Rv Locks and More!!!

But from what I read for 2017 Jayco is now going to have the same key for the entry doors (hopefully for the outdoor kitchen also!). Not sure if storage doors are included in this.

My most common complaint goes something like this:

You know what the only BAD thing about owning a Class A is?

(Take out and hold up my key ring) THEY ALL FIT.

(They do not all fit, exactly, My car keys are on that ring, and so is a key or two for the bicycle, the ladder and some other locks, but.. Well, You get the idea).

IF I had that many keys to deal w/ and it made me crazed I'd spend non outdoor time changing as many as possible cylinders to the same key(s) and trust me they wouldn't match anyone else's key.

I like everyone with the same key - between the group of us surely one of us has the same key when we lose one haha...

Anything valuable we carry in the truck like my DC Current clamp-on meter maybe haha... I needed to use it last season end and couldn't find it anywhere - probably left it somewhere laying on a tree stump...

It's a shame that manufacturers don't do this in the first place. Their mantra is to always build as cheaply as possible and if the customer doesn't like it, they can fix it on their own dime.

You got it!
And unfortunately, it doesn't pertain to just keys.

I guess I lucked out with our Adventurer, it has three keys, Ignition, Dead Bolt and all compartments have the same lock. There may be a lot of RVs out there with my key but they are few and far between. I have the TriMark One Key system, I don't have to use the dead bolt if I don't want to.
