As of this year, 2014, in Michigan Plates are renewed on the birthday of the person to whom the vehicle registered. there are passenger plates, trailer plates and commercial plates.
If I buy a little utility trailer or a big travel trailer there is one fee for the plate and that plate keeps that trailer on the road as long as I own it, no matter how long I own it. All for a one time Fee.
If I buy a small car, a 1/2 ton pickup, or one of the Ford F-450 monsters, or a motor home I buy a passenger plate and the fee is based on the value of the vehicle and good for one year.
Because most of us motor home RVers that don't travel year round, we tend to store our rigs and remove road coverage portion of our insurance. My plate for the RV is re-plated every Feb., wife's B'day, mine is March. Because it is required that we keep a plate good year round. This holds true for any vehicle that is required to have a plate on it that is stored part of the year.
If we re-register late, there is an extra fee for letting it lapse. Now we can not re-new the plate at all if it is in storage and the road coverage portion of the insurance is suspended. If we are supposed to re-new in February or March but don't put it on the road until May. We either have to maintain road coverage insurance or pay the late fee when we put it on the road or if it is in storage.
One other option we have is to re-plate the vehicle every year for another fee. This is in addition to the over 700 dollars last year or over 600 this year that I paid for the license plate
Granted the late fee or re-plating fee isn't very much, but how long before it is. These fees are all non-voted by the public fees. It is the only way they can raise taxes on those of us that are fed up with politicians.
