Motorhome Tow Bar Question

I have a chance to buy Roadmaster Falcon 5250 tow bar and rock shield and see on the Roadmaster web site the Falcon 5250 is discontinued. My question is can I still buy the specific fit hitch for the vehicle I want to tow?

  • For a better response ask the moderators to move your post to the Dinghy forum. What your're looking for is called a baseplate. You should be able to go to the Roadmaster site and find it for your vehicle. If you post your vehicle we can tell you also. I just did the same exact thing with a Blue Ox setup and was able to purchase the correct baseplate for my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
  • The tow bar itself has nothing to do with the brackets on the tow vehicle. You need to find out if someone ie. Roadmaster, Blue Ox, etc makes a base plate for your specific vehicle. There are parts available so that you can use a baseplate from one mfg and the tow bar from another or vice versa.

For Roadmaster tow bars, what you fit to the vehicle are separate towing brackets, which are universal across Roadmaster towbars. If the towbar needs a baseplate, it will come with a spreader bar that provides the lateral stability that converts their brackets functionally into a baseplate. For some towbars there will be an accessory for that function or it will be a permanent part of the towbar.

Lately, for some detachable or "hidden" bracket models, a baseplate piece is also included, because that's the only way Roadmaster could find to mount the brackets. However, you still usually use the spreader bar that comes with the tow bar, as if the brackets were not connected to each other.

As for whether towing brackets are available for the vehicle you want to tow, you'll have to check that specifically, but it will have nothing to do with whether or not they still sell the Falcon. Chances are, if Roadmaster ever made towing bracket for your car, they are still available, as new manufacture or somewhere in the supply chain.
  • Thanks everybody for the help, I think I'll buy it and then when I'm ready to use it in a year or so I'll have it ready to go on whatever vehicle I will be pulling.
  • This is what it looks like, for a 100 bucks I couldn't pass it up. Now I need to get me a good vehicle to pull behind the motorhome, I'm thinking a nice used Jeep Liberty.

  • In this picture are the base plates (the 2 holes in the lower grill, on either side of the license plate), the brackets, crossbar, and security cables. The tow bar itself connects to the brackets.
