Moving a breakaway switch

Hello,

I just ordered a weight distribution hitch for my trailer and I just realized the frame brackets need to install right where the current breakaway switch is installed. My question is should I just cut the wires and remove the breakaway switch then remount it somewhere else or should I purchase a new breakaway switch and re-run the new wires that come with it and tie it into the trailer brakes?

Thanks
  • I had to move mine once. I just moved it back and made a new lanyard.

If you have to move it drastically there is no problem cutting the wires just make sure you leave enough to splice. Make sure you use some shrink tubing to keep things clean and if you can solder the connections. Don't use wire nuts, they can and will come loose. IF you must use butt connectors and crimp them down

  • Just move it to the new location and if you need to add some wire just use the same gauge wire.
  • Yes, just move it! Just be sure it has a straight pull from the TV in case it ever needs to be pulled in a breakaway.
