Newbie needs tow vehicle advice

Hello all forum folks! I am new here, first post, and I am hoping that some of y'all can take a look at my calculations for matching the tow vehicle we want to buy to the fifth wheel that we are planning to buy. I think that they are well matched but would love to get your thoughts if you have some time. Everyone here seems to have so much experience and know-how that I think it's a great place to start.

2017 F-350 SRW 6.7L Diesel 4X4 160” / 176” Wheelbase

Base Curb Weight 7494 / 7734 lbs.
Max. Front GAWR 6000 lbs.
Max. Rear GAWR 7230 lbs.
Max. Payload 3830 / 4340 lbs.
Max. 5th Wheel / Gooseneck Weight 21100 / 20900 lbs.
Max. GCWR 28700 lbs.

2017 Grand Design Solitude 310GK Length 34’ 11”

UVW 12100 lbs.
Hitch Weight 2350 lbs.
Max. GVWR 15000 lbs.
Axle Rating 7000 lbs.

Truck SWB 7,494 lbs.
Trailer UVW 12,100 lbs.
Total 19,594 lbs.
Max. GCWR 28,700 lbs.
Difference 4,380 lbs.

The trailer hitch weight (2,350 lbs.) is below the maximum payload (3,830 lbs.) of the truck. The trailer maximum vehicle weight rating (15,000 lbs.) is below the maximum 5th wheel weight (21,100 lbs.) of the truck.

The truck (1,480 lbs.) and trailer (2,900 lbs.) can carry up to an additional 4,380 lbs. in cargo

With a maximum combined weight rating of 28,700 lbs., this truck should have no problems towing this trailer.

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

Mark
  • The trailer is a good match for that particular F350 SRW.
Only suggestion I have is get the floorplan the wife likes and the color truck the wife says and go camping.

    What he said. Enjoy!
  • Just one bit of caution:

Truck 'curb weight' is from a brochure.
Accessories/options will increase that 'curb weight'

That pin weight is 'DRY' pin weight based on the DRY trailer weight
Both will be higher due to accessories/options

And the DRY pin is only 19.5% of DRY trailer weight which is low
Pin weights increase when trailer is loaded and you are most likely looking at a WET pin weight closer to 3200# or more

My 5vr wet pin is 3130# with a scaled weight if 13,873# ---22.6%
  • That would work fine! Personally I prefer a Cummins because I have owned and worked on all three major diesels, but that's an opinion.
  • Thank you everyone, for your replies to my post, I really appreciate it...!
