Odd noise when towing

On our latest trip, I have a noise similar to chains dragging, but no chains are loose. I can't find anything loose. My wife says it sounds like rocks in the wheels. Any ideas are appreciated.

Any chance it's the engine pinging?

It's possible that a brake adjuster loosened up to the point where it fell apart and is rolling around in the drum. It happened to me on a new trailer once. I didn't know what it was and the parts that were bouncing around were ground to the point of being un-useable.

That said it made the same sound you are describing.

We taped empty 22 cases on Old Man Hessel's fan blade...'cuz he ran over our softball on purpose...shop teacher, but didn't know what to do...

Eating breakfast and heard him start it...SCREAM/SCREECH...stopped...heard the hood open then close a short time later...start and SCREECH/SCREAM...while he drove past our house...

Dad wondered why I spit out my mouthful of cereal...almost choking while laughing out loud...

We also poured Rice Krispies down his defroster vents, turned on the fan full blast, his radio full blast and the wipers...He started locking his car after that one

Vowed to never become the Old Man Hessel in my neighborhood when an adult...kids have way more time to mess with you if you give a reason to...

I had a stone trapped in the front brake cover on our 08 Suburban. Sometimes it would bounce around, sometimes it got stuck. It was annoying until i found the problem.

Ah the memories of childhood :B

Off topic I know, but when I was about 13 years old, I had one of those valve stem valve removers I used on my bicycle. I stayed at my cousin's house one week-end and we snuck out. We hit every family in that town my cousin did not like and loosened the valve, enough it would start leaking and the tire would eventually go flat. We put the valve cap on back loose so the air would escape. We didn't get caught. In case anyone is interested, the year was around 1968. I think the statue of limitations has long run out on those petty crimes, and considering most of families are now gone, moved, or dead, I think it's now safe to admit what I did! Yep! Memories of childhood.

For the op: Sounds like rocks to me.

Do you have hubcaps or wheel rings on your tow vehicle or trailer?
I have heard/seen people that get a pebble or something in there and it rattles around.
