This is from 2006, but I don't actually think I ever told it since this was in pre-RV days. This was the FIRST time we camped. Ever. In a Tent.
We headed out to Livingston SP in Livingston Texas. Brand new tent, air mattresses, the whole works. It was me and my son, who was just 9 at the time. We set up, I fixed dinner, we walked around & explored & had a fire. Then we went to bed.
The family in the site next to us were still up, laughing and with the fire going. They finally went to bed about midnight I think. Brief bit of quiet. About 2AM I was awakened by the man (father?) bellowing drunkenly "Deborah, where's the bread?" "I'm Hungry". "I want a sandwich". "Where's the bread?" over and over and tripping/stumbling over things in the campsite in the dark. This went on for about 10 minutes, along with many expletives as he tripped over things and couldn't find the bread, which was the Holy Grail to him now.
Finally I muttered to myself "Get the *&^%$ man his bread Deborah!" to which my son (who was awake but I didn't know it) fell OUT laughing. So I started laughing and then every time we looked at each other we just laughed harder. The man was making so much noise he didn't even realize it.
Finally, someone came out & got him the bread or made him a sandwich or something & all was quiet. We fell back asleep. For about an hour.
Suddenly we were awakened by a younger man --his son-- SCREAMING "No Dad STOP!! NO DON'T DO THAT!! STOP,STOP!" at the top of his lungs, and the sound of more tripping, falling, more expletives and a FLURRY of activity from the site. And "Dad" saying (very slurred speech because by now he's had a few MORE beers in him) "I just want to put the fire out. I'm just gonna put the fire out".
Seems as intoxicated as he was he'd grabbed the FULL GAS CAN as his method of 'putting the fire out'. Son was explaining all this to someone else at the campsite is how we were aware of what had happened.
However, Danger was averted, someone finally persuaded Pops to quit drinking and go to bed, and quiet reigned. At the time, I was NOT happy to get so little sleep that night, but it's gotten more humorous as the years have gone by!
