Pet Peeves in RV Parks

At the risk of sounding like an old grouch, lets lay out our gripes about camping in RV Parks. I'm currently on Galvestion Texas for a month. Things were quiet until this truck and old camper pulled in next to me alast night. The guy is a door slamber. A constant door shut niose went on for at least two hours. He has a bunch of kids that were also loud but I can overlook that. Kids will be kids. Why didn' he leave his doors open while he set up. Then there is another neighbor who fires up a truck with loud pipes and lets it run forever. These are my two gripes of the day. Seems like every park you stay in has has the loud truck start up and idle. Part of the problem is sites are so close together. Anyone else?

SterlingHayden...welcome to the forum!

Yup, a few grumpy old men on most any forum. You just need to smile, look past the old guy having a bad day.

You'll notice the fun, more easy going folks on this forum, are the much larger number! ๐Ÿ™‚

Lots of knowledgeable people, with helpful info, that you can share info with. Hope to notice that you stuck around, to add to a great forum!

Wow!

Some of you folks must be a real joy to camp with. Pasting notes on others vehicles about their lights lol? Really? Something like that might just get you punched in The teeth, or dentures.

Never thought dogs would get more complaints than kids would. I've only had a couple of times that barking dogs were ever a problem and then I just ignored it because it was through the daytime. Most take the pup with them when they go. Dogs everywhere policy. Places don't restrict dogs like they used to. My peeve has always been site encroachers. Just keep all your stuff in your own site.

The higher sewer connections are almost always a result of local or state ordinances where flooding can release bad stuff into places it shouldn't be. SC state parks for example.

I'm up early, really early. If the nose LEDs are still on I leave a polite note on the offending windshield. It's actually worked a time or two.

Somebody mentioned a deaf eye. That's not how it goes 'bro. :B

The need to be alpha has been disproven over and over again and was based on a study of wolves put together by man - not a true wolf pack - so was faulty from the very onset. In addition, dogs are not wolves. They have been purposely bred by us to do certain things- including to bark. Punishing a dog for doing what she was bred to do (by us) is cruel and unnecessary. And trying to eliminate a natural behavior completely is frustrating and uneffective.

Using a water sprayer is not always effective. It can be a good attention getter, but many dogs are not phased by it at all. You just end up with an empty sprayer and a wet barking dog. This is especially true for breeds bred to be independent (huskies, terriers, etc).

In addition, some dogs will react very poorly to being sprayed. They may come to fear the sprayer and even water.

Yes, you CAN teach a dog not to bark hysterically or non-stop. But you don't have to be Alpha to do it. Redirection and praise will get much better results long term. And honestly, it is much more fun than constantly punishing a dog for simply being a dog.

The use of the water sprayer should be limited to getting the dog's attention if necessary, once the dog looks at you, acknowledgment, redirection and praise will actually teach the dog a skill - how to change her focus. And that can be used for a lot more than just barking.

My little dog, in pic on profile page, was our only child = very spoiled! My partner read online, to use a squirt gun to control barking (same as wat bott). It did work, but she often didn't refill it, but just pointed the empty water weapon to control. Well that quickly led to calling a bluff! ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, my little Angel (yes her actual name) lived in the house, and enjoyed a large beautiful backyard, completely privacy fenced. Most, were not welcome in her house, or yard.

Her favorite delivery person was the pizza delivery. She would hear Mom call, ask for delivery, and she would head for her front window perch and watch/wait.

Driver's seat??? Yup, if she wasn't driving, she was sleeping in the driver's lap. Never knew it was possible, to love an animal so much, until she shared my life. I still miss her every day, since 2/18/20.

Btw: She knew how to behave, when camping, and I made it a strong point that she did.

Lots of mocking the water bottle. One must start the no bark training when they are a pup. Bottle is one method of many. If you don't establish the alpha role early all is lost. Many won't do this because they think the dog won't like them. Then the dog is in the drivers seat.

@dedmiston - I love the "cue barking dogs". ๐Ÿ˜‰

Tornado-dog always has to inform me of deliveries. However I suspect it's because he knows they bring him bubble wrap. He LOVES packages!

He also has to greet drive thru employees. He got a cup of whipped cream from one once and hasn't forgotten.

That said, most good dogs have good sense. Because every once in a while bear dog will not let a delivery driver out of the car. So she may actually be saving us from a serial delivery driver in training as most of the time she thinks Amazon is the peanut butter truck! (The TV commercial)

And the GSD loves getting sprayed with the hose, dunking her head in the 5 gal water bucket rain or shine and eating the 150mph air they comes out of the leaf blower!
I donโ€™t think a water bottle would shut her up!
I also donโ€™t think we will ever get burglarized.
Especially since after the GSD , fluffy Aussie , our attack cat (he just thinks heโ€™s a dog. Saw him chase one Amazon driver) get done, if itโ€™s serious the bear dog comes out of a dark corner and scares the shite out of anyone.

I work from home and my two dogs are convinced that it's their duty to scare away the Amazon drivers, because evidently it's obvious to the dogs that the Amazon peeps are coming to murder us.

I can call out to them in the other room and our Golden will come to my side in my office and hang her head to apologize to me because she "forgot" that she's not supposed to bark. My Aussie will continue to bark regardless, because she knows that I'm too dumb to know about the murder thing. Her proof is that she always barks and we've never been murdered by Amazon, FedEx, or Jehovah's Witnesses. Not yet, at least.

Different breeds. Different individual dogs. Different behavior.

They've camped with us for years and I usually ask the neighbors. From their reports it appears that the dogs never bark unless someone comes close to our trailer (into our camp). The predictable exception though is that they absolutely lose their minds when we get back to camp, so there's a span of 45 seconds between the time we pull up and the time we get inside and they stop. We even jokingly say, "Cue barking dogs" as we pull up to camp (or home).

Hilarious Dedmiston!
Our Minnie Aussie also saves us from every Amazon Fed ex and brown truck driver!
We live on acreage at the end of a dead end behind a gate so there are literally generally only 3 types of vehicles that pull up. The daily it seems Amazon or Fed ex delivering something my wife couldnโ€™t live without. People we know and people who shouldnโ€™t be there (very rare on the last one).
The Aussie and the big black bear looking mutt spend a lot of time out front of the house running loose because they donโ€™t go anywhere and they get sick of our Shepherd pup playing โ€œpummel the other dogs โ€œ 12 hours a day.
The big 100lb bear dog generally walks over wagging her tail. That gets her alot of dog treats. The mini is pretending like sheโ€™s guarding the fort to the death. And the only actual intimidating dog is bouncing off the fence like Tigger Too because she doesnโ€™t get to come out and play!
Most of the drivers are good with dogs but itโ€™s always funny to see the ones stopped at the top of the drive calling the phone because thereโ€™s 22lbs of fluffy fury doing laps around their car!

I had Shih Tzu that lived with me at home and in truck. More than once somebody that knew us would find me in truckstop, "Where's Sadie?" In the truck. "No. I knocked on the door, she did not bark!"
Somebody walking by? Nothing. Me not in truck, you hit door? Nothing. OTOH if I was in there, you touch the truck, she would go apesnot.
I said she was a alarm system, not a watch dog.
