Power bills. What does everyone use down south in winter.

Yep. Thats up there. Is that during the winter or summer. My guess is southern florida? Air conditioners are brutal on the power usage.

The old Ontario Hydro was broken up into OPG, Hydro One and the distribution was privatized, I.E. given to all the municipalities for free, but the debt, some nearl $20 BILLION worth, was given to the taxpayers of Ontario.

That was in 1995 under something called the ‘No Sense Revolution’ by some golf pro named Mike Harris.

Just since 2003 that debt has been reduced by almost $6 billion.

BTW, he’s the same guy that auctioned off all of the MTO’s trucks and equipment for pennies on the dollar then gave the new owners lucrative contracts to maintain our roads at a higher cost than what it used to cost the MTO to do it.

If you know anyone in the Muskoka area, ask them how that’s worked out for them. The private contractor up there just voluntarily GAVE UP the contract mid-term after complaints of slow shoddy service culminated in a wrongful death suit following a highway accident blamed on a lack of maintenance during a snow storm.

Want to guess why it’s not free to drive the 407 either? Yup, it’s a No Sense Revolution era user fee.

It’s also why your insurance company gets a bill from the fire dept if you have a house fire or auto accident. Yup, that’s a user fee too.

The actual power generation charge is only about $.10 per Kwh, it is all the extra taxes and charges that makes the power bill huge..

Co-Ops don't own power plants, they simply buy electric from power plants and resell it on their own distribution network..

The problem with that is they must buy the power at COMMERCIAL rates.

Commercial power rates are not cheaper than consumer rates, in fact the commercial rates ARE NEARLY TWICE of consumer rates.. Commercial rates are high to discourage excessive power use.

The Co-Op then DOUBLES the price and that is what the sell it for..

Ouch. But I suspect a house in the cold uses more power than a motorhome in the sunny south. Sounds pricey though. We are around 10 cents ish (Canadian) back home. Typical bill is about 65 can for our townhouse. Hydro is cheap.

No Gov "subsidized" electric rates here in PA, we are not the cheapest nor the most expensive either.

In fact, 10 yrs ago or a bit longer, PA PUC changed the rules to allow folks to "shop" for electric power sellers (generation charge)..

The problem with that is the generation charge is the CHEAP part of the bill..

Even if I changed where my power generation charge comes from it would only amount to $.01-$.02 per KwH cost or about $.30 per day or about $9 per month difference. Not meaningful and it often locks you into a specific power rate for 2yrs at a time.. After that time elapses, you often face a HUGE rate jump if you fail to renegotiate (folks HAVE unknowingly gotten caught off guard when they hit the end of the 2yr period with super large bills).

You cannot shop around for what really costs, the actual Power company that owns the right aways, lines, distribution equipment and area.

Although like I mentioned, I am lucky, the power company that I deal with is one of the LOWEST cost ones on this side of PA, others not so lucky..

Currently in AZ and in researching various locations and parks we are seeing charges from 16 - 22 cents per kwh. We are using more propane this winter vs electricity.

Sorry guys, I just couldn't help myself. Being south of the border we got our issues also, and it's nice to take a short break from them.
